MINI Concept Travelling into production

New MINI derivative confirmed for production at Detroit Motor Show

A production car based on the MINI Concept Traveller has been confirmed today as the latest model to join the MINI range. A production vehicle will be on the road within the next three years. Dr Michael Ganal, member of the Board of Management responsible for sales and marketing, made the announcement at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Inspired by the positive feedback for the MINI Concept Traveller at the Frankfurt and Tokyo motorshows in 2005, the new MINI will be a modern interpretation of the classic Mini Traveller and Countryman versions of the 1960s.

It will offer increased interior space and functionality, as well as all the typical MINI characteristics, especially the driving fun and opportunities for personalisation. The car will be modelled on the concept but the final design for series production is still to be defined.

Each version of the Traveller has displayed creative new technology, as well as bringing country-specific themes to appeal to the local tastes of different motorshow audiences. MINI Concept Detroit is based on a winter sports theme designed in the colours of the United States of America flag. The roof rack and boot has convenient fixings for carrying snowboards, skis and mountain bikes.

MINI is now in its fifth year since launch and for the first time it has sold over 200,000 vehicles in one year. Representing an 8.7 per cent increase over 2004, MINI sold 200,400 cars in over 70 countries. Over 700,000 MINIs have been sold worldwide since 2001.

The USA has been one of the major successes for the car. The classic Mini was only on sale there for a short time in the 1960s and sold approximately 10,000 over that period. Since the new MINI went on sale in March 2002 each year has seen a year-on-year growth and 2005 set another record. 40,820 MINIs were sold in the US, an increase of 13 per cent over 2004, enabling the USA to hold its ranking as the second biggest market for the MINI after the UK. The UK sold 44,780 MINIs in 2005.

Drop-top top of the pops

MINI Convertible tops the UK charts as the best-selling convertible of 2005, as a record 200,000 MINIs leave Oxford

In a year when UK soft-top sales are down overall, MINI has bucked the trend. The best-selling convertible of 2005 is set to be the MINI Convertible, already scoring 11 per cent more sales by the end of November (YTD) than the best-selling convertible of 2004.

Despite the UK's consistently changeable climate, MINI drivers are refusing to allow their soggy surrounds to put a dampener on their enthusiasm for open top motoring. In 2005 the MINI Convertible outsold its nearest competitor by a whopping 27 per cent. The MINI One, Cooper and Cooper S Convertibles now account for almost one in every four MINIs sold.

Simon Foley of Swansea - the UK's wettest city* - is amongst the 9,849 drivers to get their hands on a brand new MINI Convertible in 2005. The 38-year-old senior electronics engineer swapped his MINI One for a MINI Cooper Convertible in September and is happy to let the Welsh rain fall on him in anticipation of brighter horizons.

He said, "I was already a happy MINI owner but the opportunity to enjoy my driving adventures al fresco was just too good to miss.

"These days there's absolutely no drawback to owning a convertible. In fact, throughout the winter it's just like owning a hatch and, when the sun finally appears, you've got the option of dropping the roof and properly taking in your surrounds!"

Andy Hearn, General Manager for MINI UK, said: "It's ironic that Britons buy three times as many convertible cars as our French and Italian neighbours**, considering their extra rays of sunshine. But it's great news that Britons have taken the MINI Convertible to heart and made it the favourite of 2005.

"The MINI Convertible shares the same winning characteristics as the hatch. Fantastic handling, stunning design, value for money and a roof that drops automatically in less than 15 seconds; not many Convertibles can follow that!"

On Saturday 17 December, Plant Oxford built its 200,000th MINI this year. A Pepper White MINI Cooper S Convertible will be going to a customer in Australia. This is the first time since 1988 that the Oxford Plant has produced 200,000 cars in one year and is double the initial company forecast of 100,000 MINIs a year. 766,290 MINIs have rolled off the production line since the start of production in April 2001 and been delivered to owners in over 70 different countries.

Wellsway MINI go on a MINI Adventure!

Two members of the team at Wellsway MINI, Joanne Cross and Jerry Alderson are the lucky winners of their own MINI adventures in recognition of their achievements during 2005.

Jerry, 30, from Trowbridge has just returned from a fun filled, four day "Mayhem in Marrakech" activity holiday in Morocco which included camel riding, desert quad biking and 4 x 4 driving across the Atlas mountains. Meanwhile, Joanne, a mother of three from Clutton has been whisked away to a winter wonderland in Colorado (USA) where she will participate in ice skating, snow boarding and enjoy relaxing spa treatments.

Both competitions were run nationwide across all 154 MINI dealerships in the UK, and points were accumulated between March and September of this year. The country was split into leagues defined by MINI UK, with Joanne and Jerry finishing at the top of their respective leagues in terms of performance within their specific roles.

As Wellsway's MINI Sales Manager, Jerry was judged on a number of criteria relating to New and Used MINI's including sales volumes, and also finance and accessory sales.

Joanne, 34, Wellsway's MINI Business Manager competed for 'A Race for the Rockies' and was awarded points for achieving high levels of customer care and finance sales. Her role is to advise customers on the best finance packages available, tailoring them specifically to suit their individual needs.

Philip Nelson, Dealer Principal for Wellsway MINI said "The fact that Joanne and Jerry have won these competitions is a testament to the quality of staff we have here at Wellsway MINI. They are both very committed, having worked at the dealership for a number of years and always give 100%. I am very pleased that their hard work has been recognised."

MINI December News Flash

MINI Cooper S Auto gets tuned on

The John Cooper Works engine tuning kit has been a great success since it was launched in 2003. Demand in the UK has seen one in nine Cooper S hatch owners opting for the upgrade. From this month, the tuning kit is now available for MINI Cooper S's with automatic transmission.
The JCW kit will push the auto-shifting Cooper S to 203bhp at 6,450 rpm with an impressive 0-62 mph in 7.3 seconds; an increase of 33bhp over the standard MINI Cooper S. Offered as an aftermarket kit from all 157 MINI dealerships, the cost is £2,999 (excl. fitting).
The Aisin six-speed transmission in a MINI Cooper S auto was developed to maintain the MINI's traditional zesty drive. The close gear ratio settings ensure sharp gear changes and a dynamic driving experience that complements the sporty character of the MINI Cooper S. The great drive is further enhanced by the high level of standard equipment including Steptronic paddles on the steering wheel, limited slip differential and Adaptive Transmission Control (AGS). AGS allows the transmission to adapt over time to fit with the driver's individual driving style.
MINI Cooper gets louder
As many MINI owners know, the Cooper name is synonymous with motorsport and the new John Cooper Works sound kit allows them to make their MINI Coopers sound like racing cars. The kit includes a new air filter to provide a direct acoustic connection from the engine compartment to the car's interior creating a more powerful, sporty sound for the driver.
This has been achieved by reducing the air flow resistance in the air filter element together with modified engine electronics and a stainless steel sports exhaust that runs from the manifold pipe down to the rear silencer. The price is £645 (excl. fitting) and includes a John Cooper Works engine badge and emblem for the boot lid.
MINI gets Stuff'd for Christmas
MINI has hit another milestone this year selling its 10,000th MINI cuckoo clock since 2001. All around the country, MINI owners are getting festive to the tune of 'brum, brum, beep, beep' every hour. The clock has been bringing joy (but not peace) to homes around the country for a price of £49.95 and is available from all MINI dealerships and the mini.co.uk website. There are plenty of other gift ideas in the MINI Stuff range including clothing, watches, sunglasses, model cars and luggage.

Guests were able to sample a variety of wines courtesy of Great Western Wines and entered into a free prize draw to win a luxury 2 night break at the exclusive Billesley Manor Hotel.

TLC Gives MINI Drivers £60 Million Boost

MINI's unique money-saving tlc servicing option continues to bowl customers over by offering unrivalled value-for-money motoring and peace of mind for the first five years of MINI ownership as well as a welcome financial boost when owners come to part with their cars. Since its launch in 2001, according to Glass's Guide* estimates, tlc has already saved UK MINI drivers in excess of £30 million, when compared to servicing costs incurred by similar small car owners, and has boosted the sales price of used MINIs by the same amount again.
MINI tlc, available to all UK retail and fleet customers when purchased with a new MINI, covers scheduled servicing on the car for 5 years/50,000 miles, including parts and labour, for just £150 (including VAT).
The benefits of the tlc package are not only limited to running costs, but also contribute to MINI's rock solid residual values as any remaining tlc years pass on to the second or third owners. Consequently, when owners come to part with their MINI, Glass's has estimated that the penalty for a seller with no tlc can be as high as £800 on a 6-12 month old car and £500 on a three year old car. Such is the value of not incurring unforeseen servicing costs to a MINI buyer. Based on SMMT Used MINI sales figures since launch, total revenue from used MINI sales has been boosted by more than £30 million as a result of tlc.
Richard Crosthwaite, prestige car editor at Glass's Guide, and author of the tlc savings estimates, said: "MINI is one of the slowest depreciating cars on the market, with an average three year residual value of 55 per cent; the tlc has been a major factor behind this success."
Andy Hearn, General Manager for MINI UK, adds: "Cost of ownership has always been a MINI strength. Tlc has blazed a trail for customer value in the car industry since its launch in 2001, and at just £150 our dealers still have a job convincing some new owners there are no hidden catches!
Next year many MINI drivers will be reaching the end of the tlc package and we fully expect the new MINI tlc XL package to take over the reins, providing continued peace of mind for up to another three years / 30,000 miles."
MINI tlc comes on top of MINI's standard package of class-leading aftersales packages. These include a three year/unlimited mileage warranty, six year/unlimited mileage corrosion guarantee and a three year roadside assistance programme that includes bespoke MINI service engineers, replacement loan car, full European cover and accident management.

6000 MINI Fans Party In Italy

MINI United, 28-30 October 2005

The first international MINI United festival took place this weekend in Italy and 6000 MINI fans attended from more than 40 countries. Most people made the journey in their own car meaning nearly 2000 new MINIs and classic Minis crowded the Santa Monica racetrack in Misano.

Over 250 MINI owners travelled the 1000-mile journey from the UK joining owners from Thailand, Japan, Australia as well as their European counterparts. The award for the longest drive went to Dimitri Kotov from Moscow who drove 2200 miles to be at MINI United.

The three days of entertainment started on Friday 28 October, and included stunt shows, karting, helicopter rides, blading, live music and dance acts that kept the party going until the early hours of Sunday morning. Yet, the main focus was on the track, whether owners took to the circuit in their own MINIs, experienced a lap with a professional racing driver or watched the MINI Challenge races.

The fastest drivers from the national MINI Challenge Series went head-to-head in four different disciplines to find the inaugural world champion. Drivers from 10 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, Finland and Bahrain competed in a challenging few days of karting, slalom, off-road trials and MINI racing to achieve the highest points overall.

The first MINI Challenge world champion title went to Maxime Martin from Belgium. Swedish and Austrian drivers finished in second and third places, while the winner of the Scottish MINI Challenge managed to get in the top ten taking seventh place out of 20 competitors. The top English competitor came twelfth.

Another highlight of the weekend was a special sneak preview of the new MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit and the chance to speak to the designers about the lighter, more powerful MINI. Only 2000 will be built and will go on sale next July.

The final race of the weekend saw ex-Formula One drivers, Touring Car champions and Monte Carlo winners line up on the grid in identical 210bhp MINI Cooper S's with the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit. Despite the casual remarks before the race, the inherent competitive spirit of racing drivers filled the atmosphere and FIA World Touring Car Champion Alessandro Zanardi took a close finish, happy to win in his home country.

More power, less weight

MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit

The launch of the new MINI in 2001 set a new standard in the small car market for handling and driving enjoyment. Over the next four years rumours came and went regarding the arrival of a lightweight, high-performance MINI.

From July 2006, the MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works (JCW) GP Kit will realise the dream with a power output of around 218bhp, a stunning 136bhp per litre, and a weight-drop of 40 kilos. Only 2000 will be built for MINI fans around the globe with approximately 20 per cent staying in the UK.

" The MINI Cooper S with JCW GP Kit will be a two-seater in exclusive colours, and extra safety and interior options will come as standard.

" The reduction in weight over the standard MINI Cooper S has been achieved by modifications to the chassis and engineering tweaks. The longitudinal control arms on the rear axle are now made of aluminium, and the omission of the sound-deadening material and the rear seats has made further weight reductions.

" Modifications to the intercooler as well as engine tuning measures have increased power output of the supercharged 1.6-litre engine on a standard MINI Cooper S JCW by 8bhp. In order that such power and the high maximum torque of 245 Nm are transferred securely to the road, this exclusive special edition features a Limited Slip Differential and Dynamic Stability Control as standard.

" High-performance brakes by John Cooper Works featuring red-lacquered brake callipers on the front wheels ensure optimum stopping power. In addition, the GP Kit includes specially-designed weight-reduced 18-inch alloy wheels.

" The special edition will only be available in grey-blue metallic combined with a Pure Silver roof and Chili Red wing mirrors. The air scoop on the bonnet and in the front apron also come in Pure Silver.

" Interior standard equipment includes Recaro sports seats, single CD, air-conditioning and a multi-function steering wheel.

" A new aerodynamics package - front and rear aprons, a wing-shaped rear spoiler, underbody panelling and even lower side sills have all been added. This has resulted in a distinctly reduced drag coefficient and enhanced downforce on the front and rear axles.

Turning Japanese

MINI Concept at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show

After the success of the MINI Concept Frankfurt, MINI is launching a new interpretation of the classic Mini Traveller at the Tokyo Motor Show that reflects the Japanese appreciation for all things British.

The MINI Concept Tokyo will feature a new roof and cargo box system, as well as a new interior green colour scheme, alloy design and indicator lights sporting the Union Jack.

The concept is experimenting with access and storage solutions. The roof system houses a table and two chairs for impromptu picnics and weary guests at cricket matches. The cargo box in the rear of the car can be taken out and attached to the side window when open to create a table for serving tea and scones.

MINI went on sale in Japan in 2002 and is the fifth biggest market for the car after UK, US, Germany and Italy. MINI is on sale in over 70 countries worldwide and year-to-date sales have increased by 12 per cent to 159,413 in 2005.

So far 200 MINIsters from the UK are planning to make the 1000-mile journey to the Misano racetrack and see the grand final of the John Cooper Challenge (JCC).

The 20 top drivers from the national JCC championships will compete against each other in fully-kitted out John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S's. MINI sun seeker

Summer may be over, but MINI has been the top choice for UK convertible car buyers since the beginning of the year. The MINI Convertible, available in One, Cooper or Cooper S guise, has sold over 16,000 models since it went on sale in July 2004 and makes up approximately 20 per cent of total MINI UK sales. Year-to-date the registrations for MINI Convertibles are almost 2000 units ahead of its nearest competitor. This is some accolade in the country that buys more convertibles than any other in Europe.

MINI Concept steals the show at Frankfurt

MINI's first concept car since its 2001 launch proved a big hit for the world's press at its Frankfurt Motor Show unveiling this week.

The cunningly-named MINI Concept Frankfurt provided early hints towards a potential future derivative for the much-loved Oxford-built car. A longer wheel base, added practical storage and access solutions plus bespoke interiors and exterior styling cues ensured that the concept MINI made the headlines and "stunned crowds", according to The Sun.

Part of MINI's success has been down to its styling - unmatched on the road and instantly recognisable. But it has been the details such as headlights, speedo, switches and roof decals that have set MINI apart from its competition. And this attention to detail has re-focused again on the show car.

The concept MINI's character is emphasised by retractable aluminium headlamps, air vents that turn into cup holders, and a central navigation screen that flips round to be replaced by a Jules Verne-style globe. As a respectable nod to the past, but combined with 21st Century design technology, the lack of a B-pillar on the car allows the rear passengers to be serviced with windows that slide back rather than down. And practicality is addressed with a back window that electronically drops and lifts, and front seats pivoted centrally allowing them to swing round rather than tip up to aid rear passenger access.

Andy Hearn, MINI UK's general manager said: "The new MINI concept car has proved a big hit at the show. MINI's success over the past four years has shown us that the car has the potential to expand its range whilst retaining all the much-loved MINI traits - a great drive, instant charm and unbeatable ownership benefits. If we build a version of the Frankfurt show car I would fully expect it to contribute to yet more record sales for MINI."

MINI was launched in July 2001 with the MINI One and Cooper hatch models. The MINI Cooper S hatch and MINI One D variants followed in 2002 and 2003 respectively with the UK's best-selling convertible to date in 2005, the MINI Convertible, arriving on the scene in the summer of 2004. Each new MINI has contributed to record sales year-on-year in the UK and abroad and MINI expects to produce a record 200,000 cars from the Oxford plant this year.

Wellsway BMW/MINI Announces Aftersales Team Enhancements

Bath based Wellsway BMW/MINI has undergone an expansion to its Aftersales Department, creating an enhanced management structure using existing personnel.

Early 2005 saw a similar project within the Wellsway BMW / MINI Sales Department in terms of management structure, due to greater volumes. An increased used car display area was made possible by the acquisition of adjoining land, and substantial alteration work was carried out in the Wellsway showroom.

The company, which is a subsidiary of Renrod Holdings Ltd, has promoted Hadyn Satchell to the new post of Aftersales Manager. His role will be to oversee the Service and Parts departments as one entity, integrating the two departments so that best practices can be implemented in order to deliver even higher levels of customer service. This new position was deemed necessary as a result of the growing volumes of aftersales business undertaken at the dealership, and the subsequent growth in the number of staff.

Mr Satchell said, "Due to the size of the operation at Wellsway BMW and MINI, it was sensible to integrate these two departments under one manager to ensure best practices and a customer focus to the entire aftersales activity. With the addition of MINI at Wellsway and the diversification of BMW into new markets such as the 1 series and other new products, it is important to have an integrated approach to cope with the increased success of the business."

Peter Hemmings, Parts Manager, will continue to build upon and expand the area of Trade business. He is also responsible for developing the Parts team and supporting the Service department in the supply of parts, by continuing to provide a timely service for customers.

Adrian Roddis has been promoted from Assistant Service Manager to Service Manager. He will focus on managing the Service Department, by meeting and exceeding customers' expectations for the service and repair of their vehicles.

Dealer Principal Philip Nelson explained, "The success of Wellsway's Sales, Service and Parts departments combined with the increase of used car capacity at the dealership, and also the expanding ranges of BMW / MINI themselves caused a re-evaluation of our existing facility and staff structure."

"The result was the appointment of Hadyn Satchell to Aftersales Manager to oversee the Parts and Service Departments. As the roles are intricately linked, Sales and Aftersales will work closely together and share common facilities such as sales administration and marketing, thus ensuring that the whole dealership operates very efficiently".

The kits offered as a factory fit option show how closely we work together and will provide us at John Cooper Works with more time to develop further high performance products."

The JCW kit will still be available to MINI Cooper S owners as a retrofit offered by all 157 UK MINI dealerships and John Cooper Works garage in West Sussex. Cost is £2,999 (inc. Make sure it's a MINI adventure

Due to worrying levels of MINI 'pretenders' appearing across the nation, MINI UK has launched a public information campaign highlighting the true advantages of the award-winning small car. MINI fans will be able to see the new campaign from 22 July on cinema and TV.

Emma Lowndes, MINI UK marketing manager, said: "We felt compelled to take this action when we were made aware of disappointed owners of fake cars who are stuck with vehicles offering poor performance and limited cornering ability."

From Friday, the public can get useful tips on how to spot a genuine MINI from www.makesureitsaminiadventure.co.uk

Award-winning MINI Convertible

The MINI Convertible has taken the top trophy in the convertible category at the annual Auto Express magazine New Car Honours awards. The MINI Convertible launched in 2004 comes in the three variants of One, Cooper and Cooper S and beat off rivals including the Renault Mégane C-C and Audi A4 Cabriolet. The fully-automated roof impressed the judges, as well as all the fine attributes of 'stylish design, top-notch quality and fun handling' present in the hatch. The success of the MINI Convertible is partly responsible for the four consecutive record UK sales months MINI has enjoyed since March 2005.

Silver-chequered flag

Not satisfied with the biggest options and accessories choice in the small car market, a new roof decal has just been added to the list. The silver chequered flag roof decal particularly suits the body colours of black-eye purple and hyper blue and can be perfectly teamed with the silver bonnet stripes. The price is £99 including VAT, excluding fitting.

More power to the 'D'

The MINI One D will be 20 per cent more powerful from September, increasing its power output by 13 bhp and knocking nearly two seconds off the 0-62mph sprint. The stronger four-cylinder power unit has been thoroughly revised and offers improved performance yet offers the same economy as its predecessor. The combined fuel figure is 58.9mpg and this MINI can entertain its driver for 600 miles on one tank depending, of course, on his or her driving style.

The power hike is due to a revised engine management system and fuel injectors, as well as an exhaust gas re-circulation with a large-capacity catalytic converter. Torque has been increased by 10Nm to 190Nm and is now available between the engine speeds of 1800 and 3000 rpm. The top speed is 109mph, and the new engine naturally complies with EU4 emission standards.

New MINI uniform

The standard equipment list on all MINIs will get longer from the Autumn. Single CD, radio boost and passenger airbag de-activation will be added to all models. White indicators will become standard on MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible.

A few changes to the extensive option list will take place in September too. Hyper blue metallic, previously only available on MINI Cooper S, will now be available across the range. The price for Satellite navigation and Bluetooth telephone preparation will both be reduced by £210, to £1440 and £840 respectively*.

The MINI range will receive its first model price increase since the model refresh in July 2004. An average two per cent increase will apply to the entire MINI range bar MINI One D, to which a 4.7 per cent increase will apply to reflect the more powerful new engine.

The MINI range starts from £10,995 on-the-road for the MINI One.

This September, MINI will add three new models to the existing hatchback range - MINI One Seven, MINI Cooper Park Lane and MINI Cooper S Checkmate.

Since launch, MINI customers have always benefited from the availability of the cost effective Salt, Pepper and Chili option packages. These packages remain, but the 'Seven', 'Park Lane' and 'Checkmate' models add exclusive equipment and additional standard specification, giving the MINI driver even more choice when it comes to personalising their car.

The new models offer unique specification, colours and trim. Prices are as follows:

MINI One Seven £12,565
MINI Cooper Park Lane £15,260
MINI Cooper S Checkmate £17,635

Andy Hearn, MINI UK General Manager said: "MINI's desirability in the UK continues to set it apart from its competitors. New and used car sales continue to rise and the arrival of 'Seven', 'Park Lane' and 'Checkmate' adds to the mouth-watering choices for potential MINI buyers. With the new models MINI is set to continue the excitement enjoyed over the last four years by both our customers and the Oxford factory."

It's a MINI Stunt Job

The new 'Italian Job Stunt Track' rollercoasters will be taking their first passengers in replica MINIs on high-speed action adventures from May this year. The rides are based on the final scenes of the 2003 'Italian Job' film and feature 75 per cent scale fibreglass MINIs.

Designed to provide 1000 riders per hour with an extreme MINI adventure, Paramount's Wonderland theme park in Toronto, Canada unveiled its new star attraction on May 1st. From May 20th the King's Island park in Cincinnati, USA will open its own MINI rollercoaster.

Travelling at speeds of up to 40mph and with the equivalent force of 1500 horsepower, the fibreglass MINI Cooper S Convertibles will dodge police cars, avoid a helicopter, shoot down a black tunnel and complete four, 360 degree turns.

The multi-million dollar rollercoasters took six months to build and the Paramount engineers received technical advice from MINI in order to replicate the infamous tarmac-hugging grip of the UK's best-loved small car. Each car on the rollercoaster features a special power slide effect to simulate the turns and intensify the driving experience.

'The Italian Job' film released in 2003 starred Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg and earned $100 million at the box office in the US alone. It is anticipated that over three million people will visit the two Paramount theme parks this year.

February news in brief

MINI USA hits 100,000 milestone

MINI USA has sold its 100,000th car since the launch in March 2002, two years ahead of initial forecasts. The sales target in 2002 was 20,000 per annum, but America has fallen for the car following its 'Car of the Year' award (the first European car to win the award) at the Detroit International Auto Show in 2003.

In 2004, MINI USA sold 36,032 cars.

This popularity has also led to the expansion of the dealer network by an extra ten dealerships to bring the total number to 80 nationwide. The top three regional markets for MINI in the USA are New York metropolitan, South Florida and California.

American MINI drivers have embraced the MINI culture. Over 150 MINIs are soon to descend on Las Vegas to drive in convoy through the city, over the Hoover Dam and far, far into the Red Rock Canyon. The 'MINI Vacation in Vegas' is organised by the Nevada MINI owners club, and on the first event last year MINI drivers turned up from all over the US.

iPod your MINI

Journalists need no longer fear leaving CDs of questionable taste in MINIs from the press fleet, as long as they remember their iPods. An iPod connector has been added to all press fleet MINIs without the six-CD changer.

The interface allows an Apple iPod to be connected to the car's audio system using a cable in the glovebox. After initial set-up on the 'pod, the music is played through the normal audio system, and controlled using the radio or multifunction steering wheel. The cost is £125 (inc. VAT, excl. fitting) and is only available for cars with Radio Boost.

MINI global expansion continues

From the end of February, MINI will be on sale in South Korea bringing the total number of MINI markets to over 70 countries. 2004 saw Argentina, Bulgaria and Venezuela added to MINI's global family as the 500,000th car left the Oxford production line.

BMW Group invests over £100 million in the Oxford plant

The BMW Group is investing over £100 million in its Oxford plant between now and 2007 and is creating around 200 new jobs in MINI production.

Most of the investment is destined for a new body shell production building and further modernisation of the paint shop to increase production flexibility at the plant.

Laying the foundation stone for the new 15,000 m² body shop, Dr Norbert Reithofer, member of the board for production at BMW AG, today signalled the start of preparation for MINI production to meet the future needs of the brand and the market. "These measures will allow us to react even more flexibly to the high demand for MINI throughout the world. At the same time, we are increasing our flexibility as regards the production of the various MINI model variants", said Reithofer.

Since its launch in 2001, production figures for the MINI, originally planned for around 100,000 vehicles per year, reached a record level of 189,492 in 2004 making the Oxford plant the 4th largest vehicle producer in the UK. The total number of employees has risen to 4,500 including 128 apprentices.

This growth has been based on continuous efficiency improvements in production processes including ideas from the plant's employees which have led to savings of £17.2 million since 2002. With one of the most flexible working time models in the UK automotive industry, the current three-shift working pattern enables the plant, in response to customer demand, to run 7 days and up to 134 hours per week using the remaining time for maintenance and cleaning.

Dr Heiss, managing director of Plant Oxford, said: "It's not just the high quality of vehicles produced here but also the customer focus and production flexibility that have played such a major role in the car's success. The contribution of our employees through their flexibility and commitment to MINI has also provided the foundation for this latest investment. Today's ceremony marks a further milestone in the future of MINI in Oxford and the MINI adventure is set to continue!"

From 2007, over 80 people and 160 computer-controlled welding robots will be assembling MINI body shells in the new building. The paint shop will be equipped with new, highly efficient and flexible paint technologies to improve both capacity and flexibility.

The links between the Oxford plant and the BMW Group's plants at Hams Hall and Swindon are also to be strengthened with the supply of engines and pressed parts.

A time capsule, containing a MINI model, some MINI production materials, a drawing by one of the children at the company's MINI Kidz day nursery adjacent to the plant, and a copy of the Oxford Mail newspaper, is being laid with the foundation stone.

Between 2000 and 2004, the BMW Group invested £280 million in the production of MINI vehicles in Oxford. MINI is on sale in more than 70 different countries from Chile to China and worldwide sales since launch reached a total of 529,921 vehicles at the end of 2004. The UK remains the largest market followed by the US and Germany with more than 70 per cent of MINIs being exported from the Oxford plant.

And The Winner is...MINI One Convertible Wins What Car? 2005 'Best Convertible'

More space is needed in MINI's trophy cabinet after What Car? magazine awarded the MINI One Convertible best in class at its awards ceremony in London last night.
The MINI One Convertible beat competitors such as the Peugeot 206CC and VW Beetle Cabrio to win the esteemed award.

David Motton, editor of What Car? magazine, said: "The drop-top MINI's arrival was eagerly awaited, and it didn't disappoint. The Convertible hasn't lost any of the hard-top's handling ability. With prodigious grip, responsive steering and a snappy gearshift, the MINI provides a really engaging drive. Prices are competitive against rivals, and the MINI really shines through on resale values."

The MINI One and Cooper Convertible went on sale in the Summer of 2004, with the MINI Cooper S Convertible launched two months later. An incredible 7,000 owners are now enjoying the open-top model, with the MINI Convertible leading convertible car sales in the fourth quarter of 2004*.

Many more MINI sales in Manchester (and the rest of the UK too)

MINI sales in Manchester, Nottingham and Newcastle have increased by over 10 per cent in the past year and record sales have been registered across the country in 2004. MINI UK has beaten its targets once again and surpassed the 2003 full-year sales figure by eight per cent, totalling 43,660 new MINI owners in 2004. Nearly 16 per cent of those registrations are MINI Convertibles, despite only being on sale since July.

As MINI enters its fifth year, Trevor Houghton-Berry, MINI's inaugural and successful General Manager has decided to leave for new adventures. Houghton-Berry became MINI's UK manager in 2000 and was responsible for leading the team of staff and dealers on the path to success. Notable milestones included 50,000 people visiting dealerships on the launch weekend of MINI One and Cooper, and the introduction of the MINI Convertible earlier this year. In April 2004, the 100,000th UK MINI registration was achieved, a year earlier than expected, and the UK still remains the biggest selling market globally.

Houghton-Berry's successor is Andy Hearn. Hearn has considerable experience within BMW Group across sales, aftersales and marketing departments. This has included a close co-operation with the MINI sales and marketing department throughout its first few years. The change is effective from 1 January 2005.

Andy Hearn, General Manager for MINI UK, said: "In my last role of National Sales Manager, I was responsible for MINI sales as well as BMW so I've enjoyed seeing the MINI success story since the decision to develop the car and its UK sales network. I'm very excited about taking MINI on to its next big adventure in the UK."

Roller-MINI

MINI fans will soon genuinely experience what it feels like to corner on rails when the world's first MINI rollercoaster - the 'Italian Job Stunt Track' - opens in Spring 2005. Paramount Kings Island theme parks in America and Canada will feature multi-million dollar MINI rollercoasters. The tummy-turning final high-speed scenes of the 2003 'Italian Job' film will be recreated through loops, drops and 90 degree corners at the theme parks in Cincinnati and Toronto.

Actors Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg and Edward Norton starred in the film set in Venice and Los Angeles. Drawing its inspiration from the classic 1969 original, the 2003 version repeated that film's success with heroic MINI stunts and jaw-dropping driving scenes.

Now everyone can experience that hair-raising MINI action. On boarding the rollercoaster, visitors sit in a MINI 30 per cent smaller than a working car and once belted-up the ride will go through tunnels, drive down stairs, dodge near-collisions and avoid explosions. Hollywood special effects and audio-recordings inside the specially-designed 'Italian Job Stunt Track' MINI Convertibles will recreate chase scenes as the cars race along the track. The rollercoaster finishes by splashing through an LA-style aqueduct.

MINI tender Loving Care Now Available in 'Xtra Large' size

In 2005, MINI owners whose New Year resolution is 'must pay very little for eight years servicing' will have more success than 'must stop smoking' or 'must go on a diet'. From 1 January, MINI UK is offering a new servicing package for eight years or 80,000 miles at a cost of £450 (inc. VAT).

MINI tlc XL will add a further three years or 30,000 miles to the current MINI tlc service package that lasts five years/50,000 miles. The cost of MINI tlc XL will be £300 (inc. VAT), if bought separately from MINI tlc.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, general manager for MINI UK, said: "With some of our MINI owners now well into their MINI tlc 50,000 mile cover period, it's great to be able to offer them a top-up package that means they can enjoy the benefits of fixed cost motoring for years to come. MINI tlc XL is 'extra large' in name and 'extra large' in value."

MINI tlc XL can either be bought together with MINI tlc when the car is first purchased or once MINI tlc has come to an end, as long as it's before the next service is due. MINI tlc and XL are both transferable to new owners if the car is sold during the eight year period.

Richard Crosthwaite, prestige car editor at Glass's Guide, said: "This new service package will add to the public's already strong confidence in MINI, and as it's one of the slowest depreciating cars on the market, MINI tlc XL looks set to help this performance continue."

In the New Year, the cost of the standard MINI tlc will rise to £150 - the first price increase since the package was launched in 2001.

Wellsway (Bath) Ltd is delighted to announce that Philip Nelson has been appointed as Dealer Principal of Wellsway BMW and MINI.

In the position of Dealer Principal, Philip heads up the entire dealership's operations as the most senior person at the site, and as such, the role is pivotal to the running of an extremely busy BMW and MINI dealership.

Philip is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the dealership, including sales, service and parts. All managers work very closely with him in a team effort to ensure that every customer of Wellsway BMW and MINI has the best possible experience when visiting the Bath based branch.

Currently living in Farleigh Wick, Philip aged 43 joins Wellsway with a diverse and extensive background in the motor trade. His career started as a junior salesman over 25 years ago for Datsun in Bournemouth, before moving to a VW and Audi dealership as an Audi Specialist in Christchurch.

He was then appointed as Regional Manager for the Imco Group - administrators of new car extended warranties - where he was promoted internally to National Account Manager for Peugeot Extended Warranties, based in London. Philip then became Zone Sales Manager for Fiat Auto (UK) Ltd, before being promoted internally to Business Development Manager responsible for the South West area.

From there Philip was appointed as Group Manager - Dealer Fleet for Caledonia Motor Group, whom at the time had 40 car dealerships ranging from South West England to Scotland, where he was responsible for all local corporate sales. He then took an appointment with a Consultancy and was responsible for the Fleet Programme on behalf of Fiat Auto (UK) Ltd.

Sweet MINI Chariot

On Monday 22 November, MINI's rock-solid desirability increased seven-fold. At a London charity event commemorating England's Rugby World Cup victory a red MINI Cooper was auctioned for a staggering £90,000, over seven times its list price. The event to celebrate the anniversary was attended by the England rugby squad and over 20 players signed the St George's flag roof, contributing in a small way to the increased valuation!

The evening was organised by ex-England players Kyran Bracken and Paul Grayson to raise funds for their chosen charities and testimonial season.

MINI dealership Specialist Cars Ltd in Stevenage provided the MINI. Dealer Principal, Clive Fletcher, said, "We have had a relationship with Kyran's club, Saracens, for over 10 years and were pleased to be able to help with his fund-raising. Equally, it was great to have a MINI celebration of England's superb performance in winning the World Cup."

The new owner of the autographed MINI Cooper is a supporter of the Northampton Saints rugby team where Paul Grayson has recently taken on a new role as coach after playing for the club for many years.

The auction raised over £200,000 and the MINI was the highest bid of the evening. With all the autographs protected from the elements (and the odd carwash) by a clear lacquer, its residual value is expected to remain intact.

Two charities that will benefit from the evening are the Wooden Spoon Society, rugby's own charity that supports disadvantaged children and the Saints Benevolent Fund.

New Year, New Options. MINI Product Revisions for 2005 Including Automatic Transmission for MINI Cooper S.

From 1st January 2005, MINI will be available with a number of new options that further increases the opportunity for MINI owners to personalise their cars.

For the first time, MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible will be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission that includes Steptronic mode and Steptronic paddles on the steering wheel as standard. Unlike the MINI One and MINI Cooper Continuously Variable Transmission system, this new automatic transmission has fixed gear ratios which result in quicker gear changes and a dynamic driving experience tuned specifically to match the MINI Cooper S' sporty character.

This new automatic transmission also features AGS (Adaptive Transmission Control). AGS allows the transmission to adapt in accordance with the driver's driving style. For example, the transmission will build the revs for longer before changing gear if it 'knows' the driver enjoys driving to the car's limits. The automatic transmission is priced at £1,050.

MINI One, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper Convertible will keep the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Steptronic, but the option will also include Steptronic paddles on the steering wheel. CVT works without a specific gearing ratio that results in it being continuously variable. It can adapt constantly to the driving environment to hand, offering both smooth in town gear changes and more dynamic transmission slots when the driver chooses to enjoy a meandering B-road. The CVT transmission is priced at £1,050.

MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible will also have the option of limited slip differential. Limited slip differential increases traction resulting in improved handling and increased stability. It also ensures that the threshold for Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is increased benefiting enthusiastic drivers as they seek to wring the full performance out of their MINI. Limited slip differential is priced at £100 or is fitted as standard if a CHILI pack is specified. It is only offered in conjunction with a manual transmission.

17" 5-Star BULLET light alloy wheels, previously only available on MINI Convertible models, will be offered on all other MINIs in the range. This wheel becomes standard for any MINI Cooper S ordered with a CHILI pack from January onwards. Customers have the option of keeping the 17" S-Spoke alloy, (previously standard with a CHILI pack) if desired.

17" WEB Spoke light alloy wheels are new two-piece bolted alloys that will be available on all models in the MINI range. Pricing starts at £480 to £1600 depending on model selected and level of specification.

More new options available from January 2005 are listed as follows:

Door mirror caps in body colour for MINI One Convertible
Door mirror caps on a MINI One are matt black. Body coloured option £50.

Automatic dimming rear view mirror
Available as a single option for the first time on all models. Price £85.

Rain sensor and automatic 'headlight-on' sensor
A new combined option available on all models. Price £85.

White indicator lights
New white indicator lights in rear cluster and white side repeaters available for all MINI models priced at £50. Price for MINI Cooper S is £35 as white side repeaters are already standard on this model.

Further changes have been made to existing options:

The content of the visibility package will be increased to include automatic 'headlight-on' sensor. Priced at £220, the package also includes automatic dimming rear view mirror, rain sensor and heated front windscreen.

Satellite Navigation will be expanded to include a single CD player and TMC* (Traffic Message Channel) as standard. TMC is an advanced traffic warning system that not only gives visual and verbal warnings of impending traffic problems but can also re-route the driver to avoid the delay. To reflect the additional specification level, Satellite Navigation will be increased in price from £1,410 to £1,650, or £1,550 if ordered in conjunction with a SALT, PEPPER or CHILI pack.

All MINI models will benefit from a change to the capacity of the washer bottle. The bottle has been increased in size by 0.4 litres to approximately 2.5 litres. In addition, an orange warning lamp will be situated on the right hand indicator stalk to advise drivers when their washer fluid is running low. As a result, the security alarm lamp that is currently positioned on the right hand indicator stalk will move to the left hand indicator stalk.

New Accessories
MINI has introduced a retrofit leather seat upgrade kit ideal for customers who wish to upgrade their own MINI or have bought a used MINI with cloth seats but would prefer leather. The kit fully upgrades both the front and rear seats. An added advantage for MINIs fitted with standard seats is that upgrading to leather seats also includes the addition of sports seats. The retrofit leather seat kit is priced at £1,450 plus three hours fitting time. For a further £100 the heated seat option can also be added. Three trims are available:

Mono - only available in Panther Black.

Twin - Panther Black edge with either Chili Red or Lapis Blue in the middle of the seat.

Stripes - Panther Black with two coloured stripes running through the seat in either White, Grey or Chili Red.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible will make its UK debut at The Sunday Times Motor Show Live on 25th May. It will be priced at £17,595 and will go on sale in the UK at the end of August. Just like the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible, the MINI Cooper S Convertible will be built at Plant Oxford in the UK.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible is powered by the flexible 1.6 litre, four-cylinder engine used in the MINI One and the MINI Cooper. However, the addition of supercharger and intercooler technology enables the MINI Cooper S Convertible to produce 170bhp at 6,000rpm. Maximum torque of the MINI Cooper S Convertible is 220Nm at 4000rpm. This means that the MINI Cooper S Convertible has an additional 7bhp, and 10Nm more torque than the original MINI Cooper S.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible races from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and accelerates from 50-75mph in fourth gear in 6.6 seconds. Top speed is 134mph and fuel consumption is 32.1mpg.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible is fitted with a fully electric roof, Park Distance Control and 16 inch 'X lite' alloy wheels as standard. An exclusive 17-inch, five star bullet alloy wheel is available exclusively for the MINI Convertible range. Just like the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible, the MINI Cooper S Convertible will be launched with a choice of ten exterior paint colours including Cool Blue, Hot Orange and two exclusive MINI Cooper S colours - Hyper Blue and Dark Silver.

A minor refresh for MINI One, MINI One D, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S.

From July 2004, the MINI hatchback range will receive an enhanced interior and exterior look. In addition, modifications to the transmission will increase engine flexibility in the mid range. Trevor Houghton-Berry, general manager MINI UK said: "Clearly we did not want to change a winning formula - customers love the friendly face and retro interior of the MINI. This model update is merely a few subtle tweaks to make the MINI even more desirable than it already is."

New transmission
A new five-speed 'Getrag' gearbox with modified gear ratios will feature in all MINI One and MINI Cooper models. The modification results in improved acceleration for both models. The MINI One now accelerates in fourth gear from 50-75mph in 11.9 seconds (previously 12.8 seconds).

Torque on the MINI Cooper has been increased from 149Nm at 4,500rpm to 150Nm at 4,500rpm. This minor improvement helps the MINI Cooper knock 0.1 of a second off its 0-62mph acceleration sprint to record a time of 9.1 seconds (previously 9.2 seconds). Acceleration in fifth gear from 50-75mph takes 13.5 seconds, an improvement of one second.

MINI One and MINI Cooper engine power remain the same at 90bhp and 115bhp respectively but the Cooper S posts a 7bhp increase in performance taking its maximum output to 170bhp at 6,000rpm. Top speed is increased by 3mph to 138mph and the all-important 0-62mph is achieved in just 7.2 seconds, a reduction of 0.2 seconds. Also, torque has been increased by ten Newton metres, peaking at 220Nm at 4,000rpm.

The exterior
All MINI models receive new clear glass headlights that provide brighter illumination. The optional xenon headlights have also been modified to include an additional ring of light spots for increased visibility.

The MINI One and MINI Cooper also get a re-designed front and rear bumper. At the front, the bumper has been lowered, while at the rear, the rubbing strip has been split with the fog light re-positioned neatly between the two halves (previously the rubbing strip was a single unit with the fog light above). Reversing lights are now integrated into the newly designed rear light clusters.

Two new metallic exterior paint colours will be introduced from July - Astro Black (replaces Cosmos Black) and Black-Eyed Purple (replaces Indi Blue). Another new metallic colour, Hyper Blue, will be reserved for Cooper S models. Electric Blue will be extended as a colour option on all models with the exception of the MINI Convertible range. This means that there is a choice of ten exterior colours for every MINI in the range.

The interior
All MINIs will receive the following ergonomic improvements:

· New storage area
· New 'coin tray' area under the handbrake
· Larger rear cup holder
· Door armrest with improved ergonomic grip
· More spacious door bin for improved storage
· Additional side mounted sun visor for driver
· Improved side support from seat bench side bolsters
· Addition of passenger grab handle above window
· Larger rear view mirror
· Clock repositioned from headlining to central instrument panel
· Improved interior ambient lighting
· ISOFIX and CD preparation as standard
· Rev counter (previously not standard on MINI One)

Upholstery choices have been expanded to offer 14 different cloth, cloth/ leather and full leather designs. Cloth Dragon replaces Cloth AQUA as the standard upholstery for MINI One and MINI One D, and Cloth Octagon replaces Cloth KALEIDO as standard on MINI Cooper models.

A new 'body coloured' trim has increased MINI Cooper S interior trim choices to five. Colours available are Chili Red, Liquid Yellow, Electric Blue and Hyper Blue. Alternatively customers can choose from silver, anthracite, alloy patina, and wood.

Prices have been moderately increased by an average of 2.5 per cent across the range to reflect the new additional specification. The price increase is effective on all cars produced from 1st July 2004. Adjusted MINI prices are as follows:

MINI One £10,780.00
MINI One D £11,695.00
MINI Cooper £12,100.00
MINI Cooper S £15,180.00

New Year, New Options

MINI product revisions for 2005 including automatic transmission for MINI Cooper S

From 1 January 2005, MINI will be available with a number of new options that further increase the opportunity for MINI owners to personalise their cars.

Pricing starts at £480 to £1,600 depending on model selected and level of specification.

Mini Pumps Up the Volume

New Digital Power Sound Module

The Digital Power Sound Module (DPSM) is the latest and loudest addition to MINI's range of in-car entertainment accessories. Approximately three times more powerful than the average home stereo, the DPSM has a full range digital amplifier that kicks out an awesome 660 watts of power.

With a whisper measuring around 30 decibels, normal conversation approximately 60 decibels and screams from a concert crowd reaching126 decibels¹, the DPSM's ability to produce128 decibels of sound through its six high performance speakers make it the ultimate in-car accessory for music-mad MINI owners, who like their tunes played loud and clear.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, General Manager MINI UK said: "The addition of DPSM to MINI's extensive list of accessories gives MINI owners even greater scope to personalise their car. MINI may be a small car but it thinks big, and in the case of the DPSM, loud. "

The Digital Power Sound Module is a retro-fit accessory and is priced at £995 including fitting. It can only be fitted in conjunction with Radio BOOST².
The Digital Power Sound Module is on sale in the UK from 20 October and is available from any official MINI dealership.

MINI Flexes its Muscle at the Paris Motor Show

210bhp John Cooper Works Kit for MINI Cooper S and new range of accessories
Performance-hungry MINI drivers will be delighted to hear that a new John Cooper Works tuning kit for the MINI Cooper S has been developed to produce more power, greater performance and enhanced driving pleasure. The new kit is capable of generating 210bhp of power, a 0-62mph of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 143mph.
The kit will be available worldwide, for both the MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible, following its unveiling at the Paris Motor Show on Thursday, 23 September. Despite the increase in power, the price for the new John Cooper Works Kit will remain unchanged for the UK, at £2,999 (inc. VAT) + 10 hours' labour fitting time.

The performance upgrade has principally been achieved through changes to the air filter system, allowing greater airflow at high revs (above 4500rpm) by triggering an extra air intake flap to reduce pressure losses within the intake system. New fuel injectors and engine management calibration are also required to ensure optimum performance and durability under all operating conditions.

The arrival of the new Works Kit was precipitated by the modifications made to the MINI Cooper S earlier this year, including changes to the gear ratios on the six-speed Getrag gearbox. In line with the enhancements experienced on the new Cooper S, the new Works Kit now accelerates from 50-75mph in just 5.4 seconds as well as its improved speed off the mark.

Mike Cooper, Managing Director of John Cooper Works commented:
"Whilst it equates to only a small increase on paper, it feels like a considerably bigger hike. With the improved feel, throttle response and sound quality, we're delighted with the results and can't wait to pass the benefits onto our customers."

Great news for existing Works Kit owners is that they need not buy an entirely new kit to realise the new levels of performance, but can have an upgrade fitted (new air filter intake system, injectors and calibration) at John Cooper Works, or any other official MINI dealer, at a cost of £335 (inc. VAT) + one hour's labour fitting time. Both the new kit and upgrade are fully approved by MINI which means that vehicle warranty and MINI tlc service pack remain unaffected.

Every component of the John Cooper Works is the result of years of development work and innumerable road tests. The gutsy performance and first-class handling are testament to 150,000 road miles of durability testing and 20,000 miles of high-speed testing undertaken by experienced and exacting engineers. It has been put through its paces in 35-degree heat and a freezing minus 20 degrees.

Technical Data
Power: 210bhp (154kW) @ 6950rpm
Max torque: 245Nm @ 4500rpm
Top speed: 143mph (230km/h)
0-62mph: 6.6 seconds
50-75mph: 5.4 seconds (4th gear)
6.7 seconds (5th gear)
CO2 emissions: 207g/km

New Accessories
Also set for its debut at the Paris Motor Show are a number of new John Cooper Works accessories:
New sports suspension uses specially developed components for outstanding road-holding, including short and stiff coil springs to reduce the car's ground clearance, allowing even faster cornering, without compromising safety. Prices start at £495 for MINI Cooper S models and £615 for MINI Cooper models. Also, a new cross-brace in the engine compartment adds stability by reducing body vibration.

The degree of safety is further optimised by the first class sports brake system, which combines larger brake discs and massive brake callipers at the front with special brake pad linings on the rear axle. The braking system is a genuine racing tool - just like the 18-inch star-spoke R95 light alloy wheels. All accessories have been developed jointly by Mike Cooper's specialists and MINI engineers.

In order to generate an even sportier appearance, a new carbon fibre rear spoiler, tailgate handle and exterior wing mirror covers have been added to the list of available exterior accessories. On the inside, for drivers after an authentic racing feel, a new carbon fibre interior trim can be teamed with John Cooper Works Sports Seats.
All the new John Cooper Works accessories are available from the end of September with the exception of the sports brake system, cross brace and carbon fibre trim which will be offered from early 2005.

500,000th MINI produced at BMW Group Plant Oxford

The 500,000th MINI has come off the production line at BMW Group Plant Oxford today, three years after the car first went on sale in July 2001.

More than 375,000 of the 500,000 MINIs have been exported representing over 75 per cent of the total produced since the launch of the car. The UK car export market is worth approximately £11 billion per annum* and MINI is the UK’s fifth largest car manufacturer.

The Rt. Hon. Andrew Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, was at the plant to see the car roll off the line. "This is a great moment for the workforce and British manufacturing. The MINI plant is a success story that is benefiting both the local and national economy."

Initial forecasts by the company predicted that the plant would build 100,000 MINIs a year, but worldwide demand has brought the half-million milestone two years early. Over 176,000 MINIs were sold in 2003 in 70 different markets from Thailand to Trinidad. 2004 is set to be another record year with 111,142 vehicles sold in the first seven months of 2004; an increase of four per cent compared to the same period in 2003. The UK remains the number one market for MINI.

Dr Anton Heiss, managing director of BMW Group Plant Oxford, said: "We have reached this achievement through the commitment and flexibility of the 4,500 employees at the plant. With MINI’s continuing sales success, we are on schedule to produce more vehicles than the 174,000 MINIs built last year."

The 500,000th MINI is a dark silver MINI Cooper S bound for America – MINI’s second biggest market after the UK. MINI USA organised for the lucky customer to collect his MINI from the Oxford plant. Dan Cowdry from California said: "It’s a real treat to see the home of MINI in Oxford, England but I’m really looking forward to showing the car to my friends back home."

MINI is the smallest car on the road in the USA and, since its launch in March 2002, nearly 80,000 have been sold.

MINI XXL

MINI stretch limo makes world debut in Athens

MINI is taking the craze for personalisation to extreme lengths with the launch of a six metre long MINI Cooper S limo called the MINI XXL which will make its world premiere in Athens this week.

The six wheel, four door, six seater stretch MINI Cooper S features the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit and was built by a specialist coach builder in Los Angeles. Fully loaded with all of the toys you would expect to find in a limousine, the MINI XXL comes equipped with a retractable flat screen TV, a DVD player, CD and radio, air conditioning, sunroof, full black leather and a telephone in the rear so that passengers can communicate with the driver. However, the highlight of the MINI XXL is the whirlpool integrated into the rear section of the car. The whirlpool seats two people and is easy to operate. Its detachable roof means that it can be covered when not in use and emptying it is a simple matter of pulling the plug to release the water.

To accommodate the extra body length of the MINI XXL, the car is supported by a third rear axle that has two additional wheels.

Following its stay in Athens the MINI XXL will commence a tour around Europe and parts of Asia where it is set to be the star attraction at various events.

MINI Convertible Announced 'Car of the Show' at Motor Show Live

Institute of Vehicle Engineers confirms MINI's top billing

Thirty-five expert automotive designers and engineers from the Institute of Vehicle Engineers (IvehE) scoured the Motor Show Live to find the cars that they judged to be the best of the show. Eight main categories ranging from 'Small cars under £10,000', to 'Performance cars, price unlimited' plus four special categories produced 12 winners, but it was the new MINI Convertible that took the grand title of 'Car of The Show'.

Considered by the panel of judges to be a 'well engineered, well conceived version of an already successful design that will have a special resonance for a great many visitors to the show', the MINI Convertible was a fitting winner for the first British Motor Show to be held in the summer.

The MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible go on sale in the UK on 26 June priced at £13,325 and £14,625 respectively. The MINI Cooper S Convertible will go on sale in the UK in August priced at £17,595.

A Stunt-tastic MINI Adventure!

MINI Convertible put through its paces at Motor Show Live

The MINI stunt team is performing over 25,000 handbrake turns during the course of this year's Motor Show Live.

Each 10-minute super-slick show incorporates 200 handbrake turns, 150 metres of two-wheel driving, 25 precision near misses, 20 J-flick turns and a 6.5 metre mid-air jump.

Stunt supremo Russ Swift and two other highly trained drivers, including his 24 year-old son Paul, have spent weeks perfecting the MINI stunt show to wow crowds at this year's Motor Show Live at the NEC. Using only standard production cars, the choreographed performance rolls out nine stunning shows every day throughout the two-week spectacle. MINI Open Air Theatre takes place in a specially constructed arena that has a seating capacity of 1000 people per show.

The finale sees Russ execute his first ever UK jump in the MINI Convertible. Over the entire show, the 'flying' MINI will travel the equivalent distance of seven football pictures in mid-air, or the equivalent height of the Blackpool Tower.
The theatrical stunt show pushes the MINIs to their limit. A specially designed floor covering saves the three-car extravaganza from a potential rubber burning 126 tyre changes, yet retains the crowd-pleasing screeching and smoking.

Russ, a former four times British Auto Testing Champion, said: "It's great fun doing a display like this - it's all about putting on a real spectacle for the crowd and showing off the MINI's incredible handling. But I wouldn't recommend people try any of the stunts we do at home!"

At this year's show, MINI is taking on the theme of Open Air Theatre, putting on a show fit for any West End stage. With a display arena sized 75m x 32m, 250 spotlights, 150km of cabling, and a hi-tech lighting desk which has never before been used in the UK, the show really is a full scale production in itself.

The amazing MINI Open Air Theatre can be experienced at the Motor Show Live at Birmingham's NEC until 6 June 2004. MINI Open Air Theatre is free of charge for all visitors to the show.

100,000 MINI Adventures in the UK

MINI reached a major milestone this month by registering its 100,000th car in the UK over a year earlier than planned. Trevor Houghton-Berry, General Manager of MINI UK said: "When we launched MINI in 2001 we knew we had a winner, but it's a tremendous achievement to be celebrating our 100,000th MINI registration in the UK within two and a half years of launch. MINI really has exceeded our expectations in so many ways.

"Originally we anticipated sales in the region of 25,000 MINIs a year in the UK based on Plant Oxford's ability to build 100,000 cars per year. However, huge worldwide demand for the car, backed by flexible working practices and continuous production improvements at Plant Oxford saw production reach 176,000 MINIs last year. I'm pleased to say that a substantial number of these additional cars found homes in the UK."

The 100,000th registration is a silver MINI Cooper S. The owner, Mr. Roy Dobb of Little Odell, Bedfordshire, took delivery of the vehicle from his local dealership, Elms of Bedford. To commemorate the car's status, a special plaque will be fixed to the engine cover, detailing its provenance and the date it was registered.

MINI has registered over 375,000 cars worldwide, in 73 different countries since its launch. Later this year, Plant Oxford, home of MINI, will see the 500,000th MINI roll off the production line. The UK continues to be the world's largest MINI market having sold a total of 40,510 MINIs in 2003.

A Growing Suit for Growing Kids

Some kids seem to grow so fast that constantly buying them good quality clothing can become a financial quicksand. Not only that but the more active they are, the shorter the longevity factor of their clothes. If it isn't wear 'n' tear that makes a garment redundant it's the speed the little angels grow at that consigns even the best designer kit to the trash can. Wouldn't it be great if someone could design a 'cool' activities suit that was able to combat both factors? Well, surprisingly, someone has.

The BMW Stoke Suit for children, is a high technology jacket and trouser combo that takes advantage of modern textile research and ProSafe protection. A clever zip system - incorporated into the arms and legs - looks after the growth problem by providing a 4cm extension. This allows the suit to be worn for considerably longer than conventional garments. The durability factor of the Stoke is so high that even when a child outgrows it, the suit will probably be handed down to a younger brother or sister.

The wear characteristics of the suit are enhanced by the use of a 'Z-liner' membrane inserted between the robust and highly resilient polyester outer fabric and the inner lining. For the vulnerable areas such as shoulders, elbows, knees and back, there is an extra layer of material and the additional protection of BMW-developed 'ProSafe Kid' impact absorbers. Large reflective zones of the Stoke Suit are a further safety feature that is especially important for kids that have to cycle on public roads in reduced light conditions.

Activities applicable to the Stoke Suit include skiing, snowboarding, motorcycling, mountain biking, off-road motorcycling, skateboarding, blading, karting, and cycling, etc. The jacket has two outer pockets and a waterproof inner pocket. When worn as a street suit, the trouser braces and shock absorbers can be temporarily removed.

The BMW Stoke Suit is available in unisex sizes S to L. These are the equivalent of conventional sizes 128 to 158. The jacket costs £120 and the trousers £75 and are available through BMW Motorrad dealerships.

All MINIs Deserve a Bit of tlc

MINI's tlc servicing package has been awarded a special honour by Auto Express magazine in its 2004 Used Car Honours awards.

MINI tlc gives customers the opportunity to buy five years or 50,000 miles worth of servicing for a single payment of just £100. It has proved to be the most popular MINI option since the car was launched in 2001 registering a record 98 per cent uptake rate.

David Johns, editor of Auto Express said: "Anyone buying a car must take into consideration the cost of owning and maintaining the vehicle. MINI tlc eliminates the worry of five years servicing costs in a single payment of £100 - it has completely transformed the standards and expectations of main dealer service."

MINI tlc facts:

·Even Madonna's MINI Cooper S has tlc.

·Only two per cent of MINI owners did not choose MINI tlc when they bought their cars. The main reason cited for not having tlc was 'that it seemed too good to be true'.

·Glass's Guide, the car trade's used car 'bible' estimates that MINI tlc saves the owner approximately £600 in servicing costs over five years/50,000 miles when compared to a similar small car.

Another benefit of MINI tlc is that it can be transferred to the new owner if the car is sold. This has a positive effect on residual values. Jeff Paterson from Glass's Guide, experts on used car values said: "MINI tlc is an innovation in the marketplace and is great news for new and used customers alike. For new car customers MINI tlc is fantastic value for money and helps retain the cars value when it's time to sell. For the used car customer inheriting tlc means removing the hidden worry of unforeseen servicing costs for a defined period. Even after five years, when MINI tlc expires, a used car sold with a full history of official MINI servicing will make it a very attractive package."

Trevor Houghton-Berry, general manager MINI UK said: "MINI tlc contributes to MINI's impressive three year residual value of 55 per cent. Compared to comparable rivals from Volkswagen, Renault and Peugeot which retain no more than 43 per cent* of their value over three years, MINI clearly makes the best small car investment in the long term."

The MINI Cooper S was also awarded the title of 'Best Sporting Car' in the Auto Express Used Car Honours. Jeff Paterson of Glass's Guide commented: " The MINI is the motor trade's car of the moment. Dealers are fighting over them and the Cooper S is the pick of the bunch."

Note:

MINI tlc covers the cost of parts, lubricants and labour involved in all MINI servicing up to five years/50,000 miles whichever comes first. The five years start from the date of first vehicle registration. Upon sale of the vehicle MINI tlc can be transferred to the new owner at no additional cost.
* Residual values taken from the Auto Express Used Car Guide.

MINI Cooper Cherished and Adored

The MINI Cooper was BMW Great Britain's second best selling used car of 2003. 4874 MINI Coopers were sold as part of the used car programme, MINI Cherished. The MINI Cooper was pipped at the post by BMW's best selling model the 318i. 4929 'Approved Used' 318i models were sold in 2003, just 55 more than the MINI Cooper.
A total of 10,212 MINIs (One, Cooper, Cooper S and MINI One D) were sold through MINI Cherished in 2003.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, General Manager for MINI UK said: "MINI has made a fantastic contribution to used car sales within the group. With new car demand for MINI outstripping supply, customers are looking at used cars as a quick way of becoming a MINI owner. A buoyant used car market is good news for MINI customers, MINI UK and its dealer network. There is no doubt in my mind that keeping residual values strong is a great way of keeping MINI owners happy!"

MINI Cooper also adored by fleet buyers:

MINI Cooper held its 2003 title of best Supermini in the 2004 Fleet Excellence Awards. A massive 40 per cent of the category vote went in MINI Cooper's direction, giving it more votes than any car in any other category of the awards. Low running costs and MINI's innovative tlc* servicing package were cited as the winning factors.

MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible

Nearly three years since its launch the MINI adventure shows no sign of slowing down. This summer sees the introduction of two new models - the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible. Both models will be built at Plant Oxford in the UK alongside the four models already in production; MINI One, MINI One D, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S. The MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible will make their world debuts at the Geneva Motor Show on 2 March, 2004. Pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.

The MINI Convertible family will be completed later in the year with the introduction of the MINI Cooper S Convertible. Again, pricing and full details will be confirmed closer to launch.

Just like the rest of the MINI family, the MINI Convertible has four seats and is blessed with striking good looks, gutsy personality and go-kart style handling. With an optional equipment list longer than any other car in its class, four airbags and parking distance control fitted as standard, the MINI Convertible may appear small but it thinks big.

No fiddling on this roof

Both the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible have fully automatic roofs as standard. The roof operates in two stages. Press the button once and the roof slides back 40cm creating an 'open sunroof'. Press the button again and the roof retracts fully, neatly folding down into a compact arrangement behind the rear seats. No messy catches or tricky tonneau covers are involved - only 15 seconds and the press of a button stand between the driver and the joys of open-air motoring.

Spaced out

Reminiscent of the classic Mini, the MINI Convertible has a new drop down boot which doubles as a handy loading platform. Two steel cables on a spring mounted retractor system act as boot hinges holding a weight of up to 80kg. The boot capacity with the roof up is a 165 litres - with the roof down it is 120 litres.

However, MINI Convertible owners with bulky items to carry need not despair. By turning two levers in the boot, the rear fastening of the roof can be released allowing the rear section to be raised. This creates a wide aperture through which larger items can be loaded. In fact, by using this 'easy load' facility and putting the rear seats down, the MINI Convertible instantly offers 605 litres of storage space.

Look at my MINI!

Two new paint colours have been reserved exclusively for the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible - Hot Orange and Cool Blue. There is a choice of three roof colours for the MINI Cooper Convertible, black, blue and green, whilst the MINI One Convertible roof is only offered in black.

The finishing exterior touch on the MINI Cooper Convertible is body coloured wing mirrors which come as standard.

The interior has also been given a splash of colour. Body coloured dashboards will be an option from launch in addition to the existing choice of silver, anthracite, aluminium and wood.

In addition to the existing wide range of upholstery choices, a new dark blue 'Gravity' leather will be offered on both the MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible. The wheel selection also increases with the introduction of a new 17-inch five star bullet alloy wheel that will be reserved exclusively for MINI Convertible models.

Under the bonnet

The MINI One Convertible and MINI Cooper Convertible are powered by the same flexible engine as their hatchback counterparts. In MINI One Convertible guise, the 1.6 litre engine produces 90 bhp and a top speed of 109 mph.

0 - 62mph is reached in 11.8 seconds. The MINI Cooper Convertible has an output of 115bhp and a top speed of 120mph. 0 - 62mph is reached in 9.8 seconds.

The MINI story

The MINI One and MINI Cooper were launched in the UK on 7 July, 2001. Eleven months later, on 7 June, 2002, the MINI Cooper S was launched followed by the MINI One D in June 2003. Since its launch in 2001 over 90,000 MINIs have been sold in the UK making the home market the biggest MINI market in the world. 2003 was a record sales year for MINI - 40,510 MINIs were sold giving MINI a UK market share of 1.57 per cent.

Plant Oxford has built over 350,000 MINIs since production started. Last year alone, 176,000 MINIs were delivered to customers in 72 different countries worldwide.

A Change Of Seasoning

MINI's 'SALT', 'PEPPER' and 'CHILI' packs will undergo content and pricing changes from 1 December 2003.

All three packs, 'SALT', 'PEPPER' and 'CHILI', now feature an on-board computer that would normally retail at £100.00 if selected as an option outside of the pack. All 'PEPPER' packs will also get the MINI Cooper S steering wheel worth £120.00, whilst the 'CHILI' pack gains a brand new three-spoke sports leather steering wheel.

To reflect this increased specification, 'packs' will rise in price but still represent a saving of between 30 to 40 per cent on average over pricing these popular items individually.

Frome Show Success

Fine weather greeted visitors to this year's annual Frome Cheese Show.

Staged at the West Woodlands Showground, close to Frome, the event attracted a large number of visitors over the course of the day.

Occupying a focal point of the show ground was the Wellsway stand which attracted many visitors over the show weekend.

Wellsway Director/Dealer Principal James Currant said, "This year's Frome Show was by far the most impressive so far at the new showground."

"We enjoyed welcoming many visitors to our stand and were able to exhibit a good cross section of the BMW and MINI ranges."

The next Frome Show is scheduled for mid September 2005 and it may be a two-day event for the first time.

More Than a Quarter of a Million MINIs Delivered to Customers Since Introduction

Two years after introduction of the MINI in July 2001, the 250,000th MINI was delivered in June 2003. In the first six months of 2003, a total of 89,880 customers purchased a MINI, an increase of 44.0 per cent over the same period last year (62,420 units). In June 2003 deliveries of MINIs to customers amounted to 15,240 units (previous year: 12,240/+24.6 per cent).

With market conditions remaining difficult, the Motorcycles Segment was not quite able in the first half of 2003 to maintain the high level achieved in the first half of 2002, sales decreasing by 3.0 per cent to 51,580 units (previous year: 53,190). This trend was reversed in June with an increase of 2.4% and a total of 9,410 units delivered to customers (previous year: 9,180).

Supercharged MINI Roof Gardens

'Roses are red, violets are blue, Chelsea's got roof gardens and MINI has too!' As the 2003 Chelsea Flower Show opened its doors, MINI's supercharged roof gardens swept into pole position on Monday 19 May, one step ahead of the usual VIP guests. And the only question on gardeners' lips, was 'how fast was the lap time?'

MINI's exclusive roof 'decals', which come in 15 head turning designs, were taken one step further when two MINI Cooper S's were given a green-fingered overhaul - including a living maze hedge garden with a mini MINI lost inside, and a swirl of floral colours, complete with a functioning water feature to boot! The two cars then sped off into Chelsea turning heads as they cruised past, stealing the Royal show limelight.

Natalie Wakefield at MINI, comments: "If there was an award for the 'fastest garden' at the show, MINI would win it, hands down! MINI owners can actually create their very own unique designs to adorn their roofs and the MINI roof gardens show just how easy it is to accessorise your MINI. However, I think these gardens may prove to be a bit too high maintenance!"

If the shoes fit, wear them

MINI Motion shoe by MINI and PUMA

Good news for feet. MINI has hooked up with sports shoe company PUMA to create an innovative driving shoe called MINI Motion. Combining the design know-how of MINI and the sportswear experience of PUMA, MINI Motion is a shoe that has been made with the driver and driving in mind.

MINI Motion consists of two shoes in one - a light inner shoe and a sturdy outer shoe. The heavier outer shoe is recommended for town driving where regular gear changing can create pressure points on the driver's feet. The light inner shoe with its protective rubber sole is better suited to long distance driving offering greater flexibility and comfort. Importantly, MINI Motion is equally suited to hitting the pavement as it is to putting the pedal to the metal. A large Velcro fastener provides support across the instep of the foot whilst the flat outer sole is supremely comfortable as it mirrors the natural shape of the foot.

2000 pairs of MINI Motion shoes will be made and only 350 pairs are destined for Europe. Shoe junkies can bag a pair at the PUMA flagship store in London where a special PUMA MINI will also be on display during the two weeks that the shoes are on sale (24 November-5 December). They will be priced at £100. The MINI Motion shoe will also be on sale at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (8-26 September 2003

Wellsway Achieves QMA Standard

The Wellsway team have completed the first stage of the rigorous BMW backed QMA programme.

QMA stands for Quality Management Autohouse, and represents a global approach to increasing and harmonising the standards within the BMW network on a worldwide basis.

The Wellsway team embarked on this process around eighteen months ago, and with the aid of a specialist coach, a series of working groups were set up to examine all areas of business's operating procedures.

As a result of the working group's findings, many of the dealerships procedures were modified and improved. To ensure the continuation of these improved procedures, the QMA program is subject to ongoing internal and external audit.

Wellsway Director/Dealer Principal James Currant said, "The auditing process is a good idea because it ensures that the new procedures put in place are continued, rather than fading away after a few weeks. We recently went through a stringent pre-audit and audit process, both of which we passed"

"The QMA process has, of course, a practical application to customer care as it looks at customer feedback and also undertakes a mystery shopper facet which is designed to highlight any weak areas and allow the business and the individuals that work there to focus on them."

"With the first level of the QMA program achieved, we will now move onto the QMI which is centred around the theme of continuous improvement where best practice is shared with other dealerships around the country."

"To sum up, I believe that QMA has been a very useful exercise to undertake and has highlighted areas of the business that could be improved and crucially, facilitated a method for implementing them. I'm also pleased to announce that we have been able to measure an increase in our customer satisfaction surveys over the first eighteen months of QMA."

John Cooper Works Tuning Kits

Ultimate MINI approved 200bhp MINI Cooper S 'Works' soon to hit the road
The John Cooper Works Tuning Kits

John Cooper Works, the original British company behind the legendary Mini Cooper has developed two new aftermarket and retrofit tuning kits, for the new MINI. The MINI Cooper 'Works' and MINI Cooper S 'Works' will make their world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 4 March 2003. The kits will be available from both the John Cooper Works organisation and all official MINI Dealers from April 2003.

Uniquely, having obtained full approval and endorsement from the BMW Group, vehicle warranty and MINI tlc* remain unaffected providing the kit is fitted by an official MINI dealer or by John Cooper Works. Prices of the 'Works' kits will be announced closer to launch.

A Brief History

The Cooper name has been inextricably linked with Mini since the Mini Cooper was launched in 1961. The Cooper name originates from John Cooper, an engineering legend in British motor sports history. With the introduction of new MINI in 2001, the Cooper name was given a fresh lease of life, and though John Cooper sadly died in December 2000, through his son Mike, a new generation of MINI tuning kits have been developed at the original John Cooper premises in East Preston, West Sussex.

MINI Cooper 'Works'

Including features such as a modified cylinder head with higher compression, modified engine electronics, a special air filter and rear silencer the MINI Cooper 'Works' generates a maximum output of 126bhp at 5,750rpm. This is an increase of 11bhp over the standard car. Maximum torque is increased to 155Nm from149Nm and is available at 4,700rpm. This power hike gives the MINI Cooper 'Works' a top speed of 128mph and a 0-62mph sprint of just 8.9 seconds. 50-75mph in fourth gear takes only 10.1 seconds.

MINI Cooper S 'Works'

By installing an even more powerful and higher revving compressor, the MINI Cooper S 'Works' has become the ultimate officially approved performance MINI. With 200bhp at 6950rpm (an increase of 37bhp over the standard car) and a top speed of 141mph, the MINI Cooper S 'Works' adds up to an impressive package. The generous torque of 240Nm available at 4,000rpm catapults the Cooper S 'Works' from 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds and 50-75mph in 5.6 seconds.

John Cooper Works Accessories

Specially designed sports seats and a 'Works' 18-inch alloy wheel are available for John Cooper Works cars although can be retrofitted to all MINIs. The 18-inch wheel is a star design featuring five widening spokes giving the car a sporty and powerful look. It fits tyre sizes 250/40 R18 with runflat system.

The sports seats have been designed to offer superb grip. With a reinforced shoulder area and adjustable thigh support for added comfort, they can also be ordered with seat heating (provided the car being converted was purchased with this option). The 'Works' sports seats are available in the same range of colours as the standard range of MINI seats. Both the sports seats and the 18-inch wheel will be available from all official MINI dealers from April 2003. Prices will be announced closer to launch.

John Cooper - a history

The history of John Cooper's company began at the end of the 1940s when motorsport pioneer John Cooper and his father Charles founded the Cooper Car Company and began producing small, competitive racing cars. The Cooper 500 set the tone and made possible a new world of affordable motor racing. Early customers of John Cooper included no less than Stirling Moss and five times world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, who sat behind the wheel of the first Formula 2 racing car by Cooper.

At the end of the 1950s the first Cooper rear-engined Formula 1 car challenged the big guns such as Ferrari, Maserati and BRM who still raced with front mounted engines. In 1958 Stirling Moss drove the Cooper Climax T43 to victory, making it the first rear-engined racing car to win a world championship race - just like all the F1 cars today. In 1959 Jack Brabham won the first of two Formula 1 constructor's and driver's world championships for Cooper in a Cooper Climax.

However, John Cooper was not only active in Formula racing. In the 1960s he achieved success with the Mini Cooper on the racetrack and in rallies as well. The Mini Cooper famously won the Monte Carlo Rally three times between 1964 and 1967, and only hotly disputed disqualification over a technicality in 1966 prevented complete domination.

Despite the Mini Cooper's success and popularity, production was stopped by BMC in 1971 after 150,000 units had been produced. John Cooper however kept the Mini Cooper brand name alive. In order to meet the growing demand for Cooper cars he produced tuning kits and accessories in the 1980s to convert Minis into Mini Coopers.
In 1990 the Mini Cooper was brought back to life and John Cooper continued to produce numerous special models of the sporty Cooper S.

At his garages in East Preston, West Sussex the John Cooper Works business continues to manufacture engine and chassis tuning kits for the classic Mini. The sharp engines and the legendary handling of his tuned Minis hugely influenced the sporty image of the MINI Cooper to this day.

MINI One D - Plant Oxford's Latest Edition

World premiere of MINI One D

The MINI One D will travel to Geneva to make its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 4 March 2003. It will be the fourth model to join the MINI range and is the first series production MINI ever to feature a diesel engine. Combining the fuel economy of a modern diesel engine, whilst maintaining the agile driving characteristics so typical of MINI, the MINI One D will go on sale in the UK on 7 June 2003. Pricing will be confirmed nearer to launch.

The 'heart' of the MINI One D is a 1.4 litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, developed in co-operation with Toyota Motor Corporation. During a two-year development period this engine was specially modified for use in MINI. The MINI One D engine produces 75 bhp and maximum torque of 180 Nm at just 2000 rpm. This high-performance direct injection diesel engine combines second generation Common Rail technology with a turbocharger featuring an intercooler. To save weight the cylinder head and crankcase are made from aluminium giving the MINI One D an unladen weight of 1,175 kg.

Fuel consumption in the combined cycle averages 58.9 mpg, and on 50 litres of diesel the MINI One D has a range of up to 625 miles. This means that frugal minded drivers will be able to drive from the Isle of Skye to the Isle of Wight on just one tank of fuel. The CO2 emission figure of 129 g/km ensures that the MINI One D falls into the lowest company car tax bracket*.

The six-speed manual transmission, which is fitted as standard on the MINI One D (and also the MINI Cooper S), has been specially adapted to the diesel engine's characteristics in order to make the most effective use of the car's power. The 0-62mph sprint is reached in 13.8 seconds, whilst in fourth gear 50 to 75 mph is achieved in just 12.3 seconds. The sixth gear ratio has been reduced in order to lower the engine's speed and fuel consumption on long distance journeys.

The MINI One D has been differentiated from the MINI One by a MINI One D logo on the rear boot lid and MINI Cooper S side sills. In addition, the MINI One D has bigger front-end air intakes for extra engine cooling and a closed off rear bumper skirt concealing the exhaust pipe.

MINI Gets Another 'Job'

MINI will be bursting onto the big screen this year by starring in a new film called 'The Italian Job'. Though not a remake of the classic original, the new movie draws its inspiration from its legendary namesake, with new MINI likely to steal the show just as it did back in 1968 in a series of action packed car chase scenes and jaw dropping stunts.

Supporting MINI in the film are Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Moss Def and Donald Sutherland. Before the cast were allowed to get their hands on MINI, the film's director F. Gary Gray insisted on sending his actors to a driving school so they could better understand how to work with new MINI.

True to the Italian-based original, the opening scenes of the film are shot in Venice and the Italian Alps but then the film moves swiftly to LA where MINI brought the city to a standstill - two blocks of Hollywood Boulevard were closed down in order to allow filming of what promises to be the most exhilarating and exciting car chase of the year. "We literally controlled those streets for a week, and that's a big deal," said producer Donald De Line. "We had 300 cars and several armoured trucks on the ground, helicopters flying low overhead, and motorcycles and MINIs driving over the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Sidewalk."

MINIs are used as getaway cars in LA to carry stolen bars of gold. Weaving in and out of traffic, performing spectacular jumps and even driving down the Hollywood Boulevard subway entrance, the MINIs survive a series of narrow escapes and prove themselves to be the real heroes of the film.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, general manager MINI UK said: "Making a new film called 'The Italian Job' is bound to draw comparisons with the classic film. The new 'Italian Job' is definitely inspired by the original, but in no way seeks to compete with a movie that is undoubtedly one of the great icons of British cinema. However one thing both films do have in common is a love of the Mini and what a Mini can do, both on and off the road. The car chase scenes are fantastic and it's worth going to see the film just for the MINIs alone."

Three MINIs appear in the film: one Chili Red Mini Cooper S, one Pepper White MINI Cooper and one Indi Blue MINI Cooper. BMW Group provided Paramount with 32 MINIs for filming.

'The Italian Job' will be released in the USA at the end of May and will arrive in the UK in September.

Full Stars and Stripes Awarded to British built MINI

The new MINI Cooper has been named North American Car of the Year 2003 at the Detroit International Auto Show. The MINI Cooper was singled out for its sporty handling and performance, superb design, practicality and affordability.

Judged the winner by a panel of American motoring journalists, the MINI Cooper is the first British built car ever to win the award.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, General Manager MINI UK said: "We are absolutely delighted with this news. MINI has already proved itself to be a tremendous success in the UK and being named top in the USA confirms that MINI is a car with truly international credentials. It is a real coup for a British built car to achieve such recognition."
