Parking Made Easy For Vauxhall Corsa Owners

Why is it that only luxury cars seem to come with really useful gadgets like parking distance sensors built into the bumpers? Parking in tight spaces can be just as much of a trial for supermini drivers as countless mums, sons and daughters will testify.

So news of an accessory kit for Britain's best selling small car is sure to be welcomed by Vauxhall Corsa owners. Mounted on the rear number plate and automatically activated in reverse gear, two ultrasonic sensors can detect obstacles up to 100 cm behind the car.

To warn the driver, an audible tone increases in intensity as the car reverses towards an object. Obstacles such as bollards and other people's bumpers less than 30 cm away are indicated by a constant tone.

Designed specifically for current Corsa models, the kit can be fitted at any Vauxhall dealership in 45 minutes and is priced at £175.

Another practical accessory launched this month by Vauxhall is a rain sensor suitable for current and older Corsa, Astra, Frontera, Vectra, Zafira and Omega models. Usually only available as an online option when buying a new car, this aftermarket kit costs around £100 fully fitted, depending on model.

Activated when the wiper arm is in the intermittent position, the system reacts quickly upon rainfall and automatically adjusts wiper frequency depending on intensity of rain without any further command, increasing driving convenience and safety. An additional benefit is that the kit can be easily removed and installed in another Vauxhall when the time comes to sell.

GTC Geneve Study Signposts Vauxhall's Clear Direction

Vauxhall/Opel is giving a preview of its future designs with the debut of the GTC Genève concept car - GTC stands for Gran Turismo Compact - at the Geneva International Motor Show next month.

Some of the design cues have already been seen in production models like the VX220 and the new Vectra.

Director of design Martin Smith says: "With the GTC Genève we want to demonstrate how sporty a three-door sports saloon can be. We set out to make a very dynamic-looking car, with space for four passengers, that is also immediately recognisable as a Vauxhall.

"There is a lot going on in car design at the moment, from very traditional to almost eccentric forms," says Smith. "With the GTC Genève we wanted to make a clearly sporty statement."

Friedhelm Engler, chief designer in the Vauxhall/Opel compact car studio, adds: "The low silhouette and the curved roof, creates a powerful tension that makes the GTC look as if it is ready to pounce."

The interior features sporty and elegant Cashmere and brown leather upholstery. The cabin, conceived without any electronic gadgets, has charcoal interior surfaces.

Vauxhall/Opel Set For Three World Premieres At Geneva Show

- GTC Genève concept showcases latest dynamic design
- VX220 Turbo puts Vauxhall in supercar-league
- International debut for clever Signum

Vauxhall continues to forge ahead with its model offensive and is sending out a clear message at the Geneva Motor Show (6 March to 16 March) with three world premieres.

The main attractions demonstrate the full breadth of the company's model range - from the uncompromising VX220 Turbo, to the segment-creating Signum.

The third attraction, and sure to receive the same amount of attention, is Vauxhall/Opel's latest stunning design study, the GTC.

Signum, which has been seen as a concept, will make its production world debut. The new model is launched in the UK in summer, and is being hailed as a car which will break down the conventional segment barriers. Signum's long wheelbase and stretched body-style combines an elegant and modern exterior design with impressive driving dynamics.

Other notable features of Signum are its interior space and flexibility combined with high levels of passenger comfort.

VX220 Turbo World Debut

Vauxhall's VX220 Turbo makes its world debut - in Opel Speedster guise. Supercar performance is available from Vauxhall's uncompromising new roadster, at an on the road price of less than £26,000.

The figures speak for themselves: a 200 hp turbo engine, 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, and a top speed of 151 mph. The car goes on sale on 24 March priced at £25,495.

GTC Concept

The third world premiere, the GTC Genève, shows the latest dynamics of Vauxhall design while providing a preview for future production models.

The three-door GTC (length/width/height: 4,349/1,773/1,352 mm) is characterised by a low silhouette, curved roof and tapered front and rear body sections. Special 19-inch light alloy wheels further emphasise the profile.

Further GTC (Grand Turismo Compact) details include three-dimensional jewel headlights and taillights and a tinted, transparent roof that stretches from the windscreen to the rear window. The car can comfortably accommodate four passengers.

Other Geneva Highlights

The new turbo engine for Vectra makes its debut. The all new 2.0 Turbo ECOTEC (175 PS), coupled with a new six-speed manual gearbox, will be used across the Vectra range during the course of the year.

With the new Meriva Vauxhall is ushering in a new dimension in the compact class while at the same time making an unrivalled offer to car buyers. Like its big brother the Zafira, this mini MPV sets a new benchmark in interior versatility.

Meriva's FlexSpace allows users to configure the interior quickly and easily and without removing any seats - for maximum passenger comfort or extra storage space. Thanks to FlexSpace, the five-seat Meriva can be quickly converted into a spacious four, three, or two-seater.

Other highlights of the Vauxhall/Opel stand are the diesel sports car study, the Eco Speedster which manages to combine a top speed of 156 mph with a fuel consumption of 112 mpg.

Trade Club Launches New "GO" Battery Brand

This week sees the launch of a brand new battery range from Vauxhall Trade Club.

The new GO battery brand will be distributed through the Vauxhall dealer network to the independent service sector, with a range of just 22 part numbers giving 87 per cent coverage of the UK vehicle parc.

Compatible in quality with OE batteries, the new range offers sealed, maintenance free and hybrid products with a three year warranty. Product support includes a comprehensive applications catalogue, Trade Club marketing and sales training. Trade Club prices start at £18 for Corsa applications.

"The battery aftermarket is well served, "says Trade Club programme manager Jim Williams, "but our research has shown that there is clearly a niche in this market for a concise range of OE quality products at highly competitive prices to satisfy demand from our dealers and their trade customers."

The VXPRO range of remanufactured engines successfully launched by Trade Club last year is extended with 52 additional price-reduced engines. This brings the popular Vauxhall two litre 16 valve and V6 engines to the independent workshop sector at very competitive prices of £1,200 and £1,450 respectively.

A nationwide mailing to all Trade Club members begins this week featuring these product launches, and also includes details on wiper blade packs and permanent price reductions on brake disc and pad kits.

Signum Enters Premium Sector With New Engines, Flexible Seating And Keen Pricing

- New and individual brand
- 3.0 litre common rail diesel among six-engine choice
- FlexSpace seating for best comfort and space
- Three trim levels
- Prices from £17,995
- On sale June

Vauxhall's new Signum, the car set to move the premium car class goalposts, goes on sale in June with three brand new engines - and at prices starting at just £17,995.

Signum combines the best attributes from more conventional body-styles - taking styling and design cues from hatchbacks, load carrying ability from estates, flexibility and innovation from MPVs and refinement and comfort from executive saloons.

This revolutionary combination of style and versatility reinforces the Vauxhall plan to produce a range of innovative cars, like Signum, which will eventually account for 40 per cent of sales.

Signum will be positioned as a new and individual brand within the Vauxhall portfolio. Based on a stretched Epsilon (Vectra) platform, Vauxhall is building upon its established strengths and using innovative design to create new ones.

Signum's model range has been designed to ensure the widest spread of potential owners. Two trim levels, Elegance and Elite, offer extremely high levels of

specification and sophistication, and the Design model provides the ultimate in style, including visible rear exhaust pipes, sports seats and platinum interior decor.

All feature the innovative FlexSpace rear seating system and overhead storage console that makes Signum unique in its market place.

Prices will start at just £17,995 for the Elegance model featuring the new 2.2 direct injection petrol engine. Top of the price range will be the Elite model with Vauxhall's first 3.0 litre common rail diesel engine, the 3.0 CDTi V6 at £25,600.

There will be six engine variants, of which three are new to the Vauxhall range:

2.0 Turbo - A derivative of the all-aluminium 2.2 engine from VX220 providing a superb blend of performance and refinement at an affordable price. It produces 175hp, 265Nm of torque through its six-speed gearbox while returning 30.7mpg in the combined cycle.

2.2 Direct Injection - New technology provides improved fuel economy, emissions and performance over the already stunning 2.2 engine. The engine produces 155hp, 220Nm of torque with a five-speed gearbox and 34.9mpg in the combined cycle.

3.0 CDTi V6 - Vauxhall's first common rail six-cylinder diesel engine offers 170hp, 370Nm of torque, a six-speed gearbox and 38.2mpg.

Network Q Turns To TV Sponsorship

Ever popular TV quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? gets a new sponsor this month. Vauxhall Motors' award winning used car scheme, Network Q, becomes the programme's main sponsor from Saturday 15 March.

Network Q has signed a deal with ITV that runs until December - 180 episodes in all - with the programmes being aired in three separate series. Transmission times are scheduled for 8.10pm on Saturdays and 6pm weekdays.

Average viewing figures are currently running at 7.7 million per episode.

Andy Robson, Brand Manager for Network Q, believes the audience for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is perfect for customers of Vauxhall's used car programme. "The show has an amazingly broad appeal across the population - something which is synonymous with the Network Q brand," he said. "This is a good opportunity to reach a mass market at prime viewing time which will raise our profile even further."

The message of the campaign will be two-fold: that Network Q is the UK's number one used car brand and that purchase of a Network Q car brings industry leading guarantees and peace of mind.

Network Q is currently enjoying a period of strong growth across the UK with record used car sales recorded in 2002.

The brand has a history of high-profile, national sponsorship campaigns. Last November Network Q ended its 10 year association with the Rally of Great Britain.

In May this year Vauxhall celebrates its 100th birthday. In its centenary year the company which produced its first car in South London in 1903 will be celebrating its tremendous heritage but will also look forward to its next century with new energy.

Cars such as the Zafira and the new Meriva will continue to put Vauxhall at the heart of family motoring while models like the new Signum - set to redefine what a premium car should be - will further the company's reputation for intelligent and innovative design. As pioneers of dualfuel vehicles and diesel engine development Vauxhall will continue in its mission to make motoring in the UK more environmentally friendly and create greater consumer choice. Fleet Bible Praises Vauxhall's 'Supreme Long Term Effort'

In its centenary year Vauxhall has been recognised in the influential Fleet News 2003 Awards for its "supreme long-term effort and commitment" in helping the fleet industry.

The journal, acknowledged as the bible of the multi-billion pound fleet business, named Vauxhall winner of the Platinum Award to acknowledge its role in motoring and fleet that has stretched over a century.

The citation recalls the company's place on some of Britain's biggest fleets as well as its commitment in the area of alternative fuels. "Since the launch of the country's first dualfuel light van in 1997, Vauxhall has become a lynchpin in the drive to cleaner motoring with the widest dualfuel range in the industry," it says.

Meanwhile the ultra-flexible seven-seater Zafira is named Best Mini MPV - for the fourth consecutive year.

Fleet News says: "This is the real ace in the hole for Vauxhall and the fresh thinking that created this market winner will soon start appearing elsewhere in the Vauxhall range."

Special Edition, Irmscher Styling Add To Astra Convertible Choices

Sales of Vauxhall's handsome Astra Convertible are soaring, and not surprisingly with a choice of four engines, a top-value Edition 100 model marking Vauxhall's centenary and a new range of Irmscher styling cues.

In the first two months of the year - and that included the dark days of January when thoughts do not perhaps naturally turn to open-topped wind-in-the-hair motoring - 300 Convertibles were registered, an 83 per cent increase over the same period last year.

This spring and summer, Astra Convertible will be even more desirable thanks to the ready availability of a sparkling 200 hp 2.0 litre Turbo engine alongside three other choices of 1.6 16v, 1.8 and 2.2 litre power packs.

The Astra Edition 100 convertible version that is resplendent in its own unique pearlescent Centenary Blue replaces the former Linea Rossa.

The Convertible is the first in its class with a remote control electric soft-top as standard that opens or closes in just 30 seconds. There are four full-size seats, lots of interior space, and a large boot that can easily accommodate, for example, two sets of golf clubs.

An extended range of Irmscher styling adds a whole new dimension and more individuality. For £995 including VAT a styling pack consisting of body-colour front spoiler, rear skirt extensions and rear spoiler along with a sports silencer with split oval design chrome-plated tailpipes and Irmscher's "i" logo chrome-effect badge will transform the car. In addition, there are dozens of additional Irmscher style items from a rear spoiler through sports mirrors and aluminium effect gear lever and handbrake surround.

"With the Edition 100 and the Irmscher styling, combined with the car's engine choices, its good looks and its versatility, we confidently predict a great season for our open top," says Astra brand manager Andrew Cullis.
Convertible on-the-road prices range from £17,385 to £21,610.

Vauxhall Helps Out With Accident Advice

A car crash is a traumatic experience in anyone's language, so a little wise counselling from the accident support team at Vauxhall about the do's and don'ts of one of motoring's worst moments will surely be welcomed by Vauxhall drivers everywhere.

Their new accident support handbook will not turn your crash into the other driver's fault, but it can relieve some of the stress at the scene of the accident by providing everything you need to take stock of the situation and seek expert advice.

Designed to fit in the glovebox, the handbook presents a three-stage plan to get drivers involved in an accident back on the road as quickly as possible. After using self-contained forms to exchange details with other drivers and fill out an accident report, complete with a sketch of the scene, the guide recommends contacting the 24 hour Vauxhall Accident Support Centre.

A dedicated freephone number is manned by expert staff waiting to provide scene of accident advice, a message relaying service, help with the insurance claim, alternative transport, uninsured loss recovery and onward travel arrangements.

Recovery of the vehicle can be arranged to a Vauxhall Approved Accident Repair Centre of the driver's choice anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. A 12 month repair warranty is just one of the advantages of using this service.

The handbook is available not only to private and company car drivers taking delivery of a new Vauxhall car. Owners of older models and used car buyers may also obtain the handbook from any Vauxhall dealer, Network Q outlet or MasterFit Centre.

Vauxhall Ramp Up Accident Repair Support

An upgraded round-the-clock vehicle accident support service for private and business drivers is being launched by Vauxhall.

Designed to embrace the whole Vauxhall vehicle parc of private owners, company cars and van drivers, access to the service is free to all customers buying a new car from Vauxhall dealers.

It will also be offered retrospectively to drivers of used Vauxhall vehicles, whether in the second, third or even fourth stage of ownership.

Central to the initiative is a glovebox guide for owners to advise them what to do in the event of an accident. Owners will be able to apply for the accident support handbook at any Vauxhall dealer, Network Q outlet or MasterFit Centre.

The handbook presents a three-step plan to get drivers involved in an acid
ent back on the road as quickly as possible. After using self-contained forms to exchange details with other drivers and fill out an accident report, complete with a sketch of the scene, the guide recommends contacting the 24 hour Vauxhall Accident Support Centre.

A dedicated freephone number is manned by trained staff waiting to provide scene of accident advice, a message relaying service, help with the insurance claim, alternative transport, uninsured loss recovery and onward travel arrangements.

If required, recovery of the vehicle to the Vauxhall Approved Accident Repair Centre of the customer's choice anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, can be arranged.

The handbook outlines the advantages of using the VAARC network, including use by Vauxhall-trained technicians of Vauxhall approved parts in crash repairs, a 12 month repair warranty covering both parts and labour and maintenance of the manufacturer's body panel anti-perforation warranty.

As well as adding value to the manufacturer's already comprehensive aftersales support package, Vauxhall accident repair programme manager Mike Partridge explained that the programme would undoubtedly encourage a closer relationship between owners and the company's approved accident repair network.

"We're proud of the standards set by our dedicated VAARC network, but we still need to improve customer awareness in order to retain as much bodyshop business within the Vauxhall family as possible."

Big Savings On Tyres From Vauxhall Dealers

Fast fit outlets may be the first option that springs to mind when a distress purchase like tyres or a battery forces your hand, but price comparisons show that you may get a much better deal from the dealer who supplied your car in the first place.

That is the advice from Vauxhall, which has launched an improved tyre programme for private motorists through its nationwide UK dealer network. The buying power of a company the size of GM means that in many instances Vauxhall dealers can undercut fast fit operations by up to 40 per cent.

The Vauxhall Tyre Programme now sources its supplies through Michelin and Stapletons, the tyre wholesalers, for all other brands, and a twice-daily delivery service to Vauxhall dealers has been introduced. This means that wherever you need help, the right make and size of tyre can be fitted the same day.

A popular size such as a 175/70R13T Michelin to fit a Vauxhall Astra costs £47.73 - saving over 40 per cent on the Kwik Fit price, while a 195/65R 15V Michelin for a Vectra comes to £85.90, compared to £97.79 from Kwik Fit.

Even budget priced tyres comparable with Star and Premier brands show worthwhile savings and all Vauxhall dealer prices include the tyre valve, balancing, VAT and old tyre disposal.

For complete peace of mind, it could make sense to take out MasterCover Tyre Insurance when you have new tyres fitted at a Vauxhall dealer to guard against future unexpected bills. For just £25 per year it covers all four tyres plus spare against vandalism or accidental damage and puncture repairs.

VX220 Turbo Puts Vauxhall In Supercar Performance League

Vauxhall makes supercar performance affordable

- 200 hp from turbo engine
- Chassis mods to exploit extra power
- Specialist dealer network retained
- On sale 24 March

Introduction

Vauxhall's sensational new VX220 Turbo will promote the company to the supercar performance league when it goes on sale this spring.

That may be a bold claim from the Luton marque, however one glance at the performance figures viewed against a price of under £26,000 puts the new VX220 Turbo in a league of one.

A quick glance at some vital statistics confirms why the new VX220 Turbo promises to be something special: engine power output of 200 hp; 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds; 0 to 100 mph in under 13 seconds; a power to weight ratio of 4.9 kg/hp; a top speed of 151 mph. Pretenders to the roadster crown (we won't name names), eat your heart out.

What is already one of the most capable chassis on the road has had further development to harness the extra engine power over the 2.2 litre 16v.

Some subtle exterior design changes give indications to the extra performance of the turbo model, while the interior of the new version is now plusher, upgraded through the use of higher quality materials and a revised list of options.

On the road price for the VX220 Turbo, when it goes on sale on 24 March, is £25,495.

Engine and performance

The heart, quite literally, of the VX220 Turbo is the familiar transverse two-litre, sixteen valve, turbocharged engine being used to good effect in the new Astra GSi. In the VX220 Turbo however, it is installed just in front of the rear axle.

The engine is constructed of a cast iron block and aluminium head with twin overhead (DOHC) camshafts.

Maximum power from the turbo unit is 200 hp @ 5500 rpm, while engine torque is an impressive 250Nm from 1950 rpm all the way to 5500 rpm. Other differences between it and the normally aspirated 2.2 include the compression ratio (8.8:1 for the Turbo and 10:1 for the 2.2), and a reduced oil capacity, but increases in cooling capacity and battery power for the Turbo.

Installation of the turbo engine also required modifications to the exhaust system and incorporation of the turbo heat shield and undertray.

The uprated sound insulation used on the Turbo adds that little bit of extra refinement for driver and passenger: enough to ensure the engine doesn't intrude, not so much as to stifle the sports note from the new exhaust system.

Given that the kerb weight of the VX220 Turbo is a miserly 930 kg (up from 875 kg for the 2.2 16v), drivers can expect sensational on the road performance. For instance, how many cars on the market for under £26,000 can boast a 0-60 mph sprint of 4.7 seconds, and a maximum speed of 151 mph?

Fuel consumption is almost identical to the 2.2 16v at 33.3 mpg on a combined urban/extra urban cycle. As an extra bonus this pocket-rocket also falls into the Euro 4 Emission Class and has lower emissions than the 2.2 16v, at 202 g/km CO2 through its modified exhaust system.

Chassis and handling

Only minor changes have been made to the capable chassis of the VX220, to accommodate the extra power of the turbo engine. The basic principles stay the same: a super rigid lightweight aluminium chassis, double wishbone suspension, high performance brakes with ABS and unique Bridgestone tyres.

Changes have been made to the spring and damper rates, which have been increased at the front and rear by 7% and 11% respectively to improve body control and high speed stability. The new tuning provides improved passenger 'isolation' and comfort over road impacts.

Wheel and tyre sizes are the same as before, at 175/55 R17 for the front and 225/45 R17 at the rear. Bridgestone's unique tyre, developed specially for the original VX220 also appears on the Turbo, although its rating is increased from 'V' to 'W'. There is also a small increase in the recommended tyre pressure from 1.8 to 1.9 bar at the front and 1.9 to 2.1 bar at the rear.

Standard brakes remain at 288 mm diameter discs all round but with the Turbo there is the added option of lightweight ventilated and cross-drilled discs (also 288 mm).

Exterior changes

Although the wheels are the same size, with the new Turbo a new striking design of alloy is featured.

Further exterior changes are subtle, and restricted to a small black 'lip' spoiler at the front, a body-coloured spoiler on the rear which also aids high speed aerodynamics. Most noticeable of all exterior changes are the wider air intakes on the side of the body to aid engine cooling.

Discreet 'Turbo' lettering appears at the rear and on the inner sill plates, while a full range of new colours is also introduced (see Equipment).

Inside the VX220 Turbo

The interior décor of the VX220 - spartan, sporting and functional - gets a facelift for Turbo owners. While the new model retains a familiar minimalist feel, some additions give a 'plusher' look with greater use of leather and fabrics.

Drivers and passengers of the VX220 Turbo will also notice a reduction in the amount of cabin noise with the new model. While the new exhaust system gives the Turbo a pleasantly sporty note, extensive work has been carried out on the Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) characteristics from inside the car, resulting in a more cosseted ride for occupants.

Revised two-tone leather trim has been introduced for the seats, (optional) while a new finish on the main dash and leather door inserts is also featured. The main instrument cluster and fuel gauge get a new look and the main dash now features a 'gearshift up' light.

VX220 Turbo Options

A wider range of options will be available when the car goes on sale, including a hard-top finished in body colour and a range of audio systems - some incorporating CD and satellite navigation - and leather interior trim.

A Touring Pack, which consists of full carpeting and additional noise insulation can be chosen, while the option of central door locking adds extra convenience (see Equipment).

The VX220 Turbo goes on sale in the UK at the end of March. As with the 2.2 16v, the new model will be sold through a network of specialist Vauxhall retailers across the UK (list attached).

Driver Training - Palmersport

Vauxhall is continuing with its association with Jonathan Palmer's Palmersport, based at the Bedford Autodrome in north Bedfordshire. As part of their purchase, owners of both the 2.2 and Turbo model will be eligible for the free, one day Driver Training course.

For the 2003 season, the VX220 fleet at Palmersport will be changed to Turbo models with courses starting in March and continuing through until the end of October.

Vauxhall Vivaro Goes Sportive For The Spring Market

Alloy wheels, air conditioning, radio/CD player and star silver metallic paint - that's what awaits buyers of the newly-announced Vauxhall Vivaro Sportive special edition.

Sales of the award winning Vivaro van last year were 30 per cent ahead of forecast and sparkling Sportive will ensure that the sales momentum is maintained.

Sportive - a winning concept copied from the original Astravan Sportive - aims to add a degree of "look at me" to the van. The ultra-modern design of Vivaro and its nippy performance is already turning heads on the highways and byways of Britain.

"A van doesn't have to be plain because it is a workhorse. It can still be made to look more attractive and that is what we have done with Sportive, inside and out," says Vauxhall vans brand manager Jon Leicester.

The first batch of Sportive models, built in Luton by Vauxhall sister company IBC Vehicles, will be ready for the important March market. It is planned to build 50 vehicles a month.

Sportive is based on the short-wheelbase 2700 panel van 1.9DTI with six-speed gearbox, and added standard equipment includes:

- Alloy wheels
- Star Silver metallic paint
- Front fog lights
- Solid rear doors
- Air conditioning with heat-reflective windscreen
- Electric windows and adjustable/heated mirrors
- Security alarm system
- CDR2005 radio/CD player
- Front and rear profile mud-flaps and wheel arch mouldings
- Rear door protection moulding.
- Alternative colours of glacier white, flame red and midnight black are a no-cost option.
- On-the-road price excluding VAT is £14225.

In May this year Vauxhall celebrates its 100th birthday. In its centenary year the company which produced its first car in South London in 1903 will be celebrating its tremendous heritage but will also look forward to its next century with new energy.

Platinum Helps Rebuild Village Hall

The Platinum Vauxhall team in Frome have joined forces with a dedicated group of residents from Witham Friary in order to raise money to renovate and refurbish the village hall.

The hall, originally built as a school, is in need of urgent repair, and already funds have been granted by several trusts and organisations towards the work needed to bring the building up to a standard for modern day use. These enhancements include facilities such as disabled access.

In order for the Village hall to be restored fully, the Witham Friary Village Hall Committee still need to raise extra revenue, to make up for the shortfall between the amounts granted and the full cost of renovation.

In order to raise the necessary funds, the Village Hall Committee headed up by Witham Friary residents Martin Eales, Richard Clark and Carol Sanders, have linked up with Platinum Vauxhall whereby a fantastic first prize of a brand new Vauxhall Corsa can be won by buying a £1 raffle ticket. Second and third prizes of a Panasonic wide screen television (supplied by Telefringe) and a day at the Wincanton Racecourse make up the remaining prizes to be won.

In order to assist in the fundraising, the Platinum Vauxhall team will be taking the signwritten Vauxhall Corsa to many of the events to be attended or staged by the Village Hall Committee, such as local shows and fetes. Presence at locations such as shopping centres and other high profile sites are also being planned for fundraising.

Platinum Frome's General Manager Glen Gilliam said, "We're delighted to be able to assist the village of Witham Friary in raising funds for the renovation of their village hall and we plan to help them by taking the actual car to fundraising events. I'm sure that everyone will agree that a very worthy cause combined with the chance to win a brand new car and other great prizes will be a compelling reason to buy raffle tickets a at £1 each."

The committee also plan other fundraising events leading up to the prize draw, which will be held at the annual Frome Cheese Show on September 13th.

Tickets can be obtained from Carol Sanders, West Barn Cottage, Witham Friary, Frome, Somerset, BA11 5HH and cost £1 each. Please help the Witham Friary Village Hall committee to their goal by purchasing a ticket. Thank You.

Vectra Scoops Top Award Twice In A Week

Vauxhall's new Vectra has won its second major award within a week.
The Ellesmere Port-built model was today (21 Jan, 2003) named New Fleet Car of the Year by the influential Fleet Week and Fleet Management publications, required reading for fleet operators with more than 100 vehicles in their charge.

Last week Vectra was named Best Family Car by What Car? magazine.
The Vectra accolade was one of four that went to Vauxhall in the Fleet Week and Fleet Management awards.

The unstoppable Zafira was named Best MPV - a coveted prize also awarded by What Car?.

Vauxhall was also named Manufacturer of the Year and ECO Manufacturer of the Year.

Fleet Week editor Tristan Young said of the Vectra award: "Last year's voting for the Fleet Excellence Awards saw a surge in the popularity of prestige brands and cars. This year Vauxhall fought back by launching a car that gave fleets all the qualities of a prestige vehicle without a prestige price. For the development and production of the new Vectra, Vauxhall pulled out all the stops and the finished car shows this commitment."

The Manufacturer of the Year award went to Vauxhall because, said Tristan Young: "The year was a strong one for Vauxhall with the launch of its most accomplished car yet in the new Vectra alongside a strong model roll-out in the dual-fuel market. In some ways it is fitting Vauxhall should be voted winner in this category as 2003 is also Vauxhall's centenary year."

On the award of the Eco Manufacturer of the Year title, Young commented: "A very busy year has seen the company further commit itself to LPG dual-fuel vehicles. Launches include the Vectra Dualfuel, the Astra Coupe Dualfuel and the Zafira Dualfuel, all clean enough to avoid the London congestion charge and all treated exactly the same as regular diesels or petrols in terms of warranty and servicing. This year promises to be equally busy - both the Corsa and the forthcoming Meriva are set for the Dualfuel conversion."

Of the Vauxhall Zafira Best MPV award, Young said: "Reasons for the award include the car's clever Flex7 system that has sent rival carmakers scurrying to develop seven-seat systems that can compete."

Connells Invests In Astra

Connells, the southern and midlands based chain of estate agents, is switching the bulk of its vehicle fleet from Vauxhall Corsas to Astras in a move to improve staff benefits.

The company currently operates a fleet of 360 vehicles across its chain of 150 estate agents on a Vauxhall single badge policy, the majority of them being Vauxhall Corsas which are supplied to sales staff with Vauxhall Vectras for office managers.

The company has now decided to switch from Corsas to 1.6 8v five door Astra Envoys for sales personnel in a move that signals a major investment in recruiting and retaining its key staff. Connells also offers employees a cash for car scheme as an alternative.

Connells Chief Executive Stephen Shipperley said: "Over recent years we have found that an increasing proportion of our sales staff are older and many have families, therefore upgrading from Corsas to Astras was a practical consideration.

"But in addition, whilst the Corsa is a good car in its own right, all the additional features of the Astra make it a really class car. Whilst we never consider cars themselves as an investment, we do see this expenditure as an investment in our staff."

Vauxhall Adds Silverware To What Car? Awards Cabinet

For the third year in a row, Vauxhall has scooped no less than three awards in the annual and prestigious What Car? Car of the Year Awards, announced last night in London.

Significantly, two of the winners have won their categories for each of the three years - Vauxhall's uncompromising VX220 sports car voted as still best roadster and the Zafira MPV, whose flexible seating system is yet to be bettered four years after being launched.

The third Vauxhall winner in 2003 went to the new Vectra, which topped the all-important Family Car category. What Car? have been big fans of the new Vectra since its launch last year, summing up the car's abilities, saying: "Toppling the Mondeo was never going to be an easy task. But the new Vectra has managed just that".

The VX220 roadster has been exciting the road testers for over two years with "every chance to drive a VX still an event to savour", according to What Car?.

Vauxhall's mid-size Zafira MPV was recommended not only for the ingenious design of its seating and interior flexibility, it also " has a headstart in terms of driving pleasure".

Kevin Wale, Vauxhall's chairman and managing director commented: "The great thing is these awards show we are strong in a wide range of different segments, from sports car to MPV. And there's no looking back - this year we launch the Meriva mini MPV, the VX220 Turbo and the Vectra based Signum."

The What Car? Car of the Year Awards are regarded as among the most influential by the industry and public alike with many of their annual surveys being used by third parties.

Vauxhall Centenary Survey Reveals Parents' Hopes and Fears

Vauxhall Centenary Survey Reveals Parents' Hopes and Fears For Their Children.

Children born at the turn of the 21st Century will live and work abroad, forego working in traditional trades and the media for IT and medicine and will have difficulty affording a home according to their parents.

In a major new survey commissioned by Vauxhall Motors to mark its centenary year in 2003, over 1,200 adults nationwide, who are either expecting children or who have children under five, were questioned.

And findings from the Centenary Parents survey paint a revealing picture of mums and dads' hopes for their youngsters - with the education system, property prices and drugs among their major concerns.

While 72% said they expect their children to work or live abroad at some point in their lives, 83% said they worry that their children won't be able to afford to buy a home independently.

When it comes to the jobs they hope their children take up, law & finance came top for boys, named by one in five (21%), followed by IT and science & engineering (both 18%). Law & finance also came top in jobs for girls (22%), followed by medicine (18%), IT (13%) and science & engineering (11%).

However, the Public Service sector - such as the police, fire brigade and teaching - was named by just eight per cent as the desired career for boys and girls; traditional trades such as plumbing and building were named by just five per cent for boys, and one per cent for girls; and a job in the media - currently one of the most sought after careers - was named by just three per cent (boys) and nine per cent (girls).

When it comes to education, nearly a third (31%) say they would consider teaching their child at home, with 61% of those adding that they don't trust the education system to teach their youngsters properly.

More than eight out of ten also plan to choose a state school for their child, with 13% having already decided they will place their child in a private school.

Dean Barrett, marketing director of Vauxhall said: "As we approach our centenary year in Britain, it's not just about looking back but also thinking about the future.

"Parents always want the best for their children, and our findings demonstrate that mums and dads have very clear ideas on their youngsters' future."

Other findings in the Vauxhall Centenary Parents survey include: Four out of ten (41%) say they plan to bring up their child within a religion 84% said they would want their children to move out of the family home permanently between ages 19 and 25 94% plan to teach their children about caring for the environment, and Drugs is the biggest worry parents have for their children as they grow up, named by 34%, followed by increasing crime (26%), the cost of living (17%) and poor education (12%)

Survey taken from 1,205 adults nationwide, who are either expecting children or have children aged under five, questioned between 17 and 20 December 2002.

Vauxhall and Royal Mail In £200m Delivery Van Signing

UK postal deliveries will soon be coming to your door courtesy of Vauxhall vans, following a huge deal between Royal Mail and Vauxhall Motors for the supply of up to 20,000 Combo vans over the next 5 years.

The deal is one of the largest orders for light commercial vehicles ever placed with one vehicle manufacturer in the UK and worth around £200 million at showroom prices.

Royal Mail opted for Vauxhall after a tender process that saw five vehicle manufacturers and a number of contract hire companies bid for the supply of vans for the next five years in a specially held on line e-auction.

The Combo vans will replace Ford Escort vans and Peugeot Partners which currently deliver the nations post.

As well as the standard specification Combo van, launched at the end of last year, Royal Mail will also order an as yet undecided number of the five-door version, the Tour, which is currently only available in mainland Europe, and may also order a number of Combos with the highly popular optional sliding side door.

The decision to opt for Vauxhall came after an exhaustive evaluation process that considered whole life costs, dealer support, maintenance issues and environmental considerations.

'Vauxhall offered the best value for money across all the factors that we took into consideration,' explained Tony Shaw, purchasing manager at Royal Mail's vehicle service unit.

Vauxhall fleet sales director Maurice Howkins said the new order from Royal Mail renewed a business relationship that had existed a number of years ago. 'We used to supply Royal Mail with their postal delivery vehicles, and so are delighted to be renewing our business relationship with them.'

English Nature Goes Green With Dualfuel From Vauxhall

Environmental watchdog English Nature has decided to switch its entire 160-strong diesel-powered car fleet to liquefied petroleum gas.

The Peterborough-based government agency is making the switch because it feels that gas power is more in keeping with its green transport policy as it produces less environmentally- harmful emissions.

English Nature expects to make a fuel cost saving, although it says that cost is a distant second to environment concerns.

The agency operates from 22 regional offices throughout the UK but believes there is adequate LPG supply not to make re-fuelling an issue.

According to fleet manager Marita Johnson, English Nature drivers are universally happy with the decision to switch to LPG after driving gas-powered demonstrators supplied by Vauxhall and realising there is no loss of performance.

The agency has ordered 1.6 litre 16v LPG-powered Vauxhall Astra estates and hatchbacks and has just taken delivery of the first batch of 20.

It will also be ordering Dualfuel Vectras and Zafiras, and Marita Johnson calculates that it will be two years before the whole car fleet has switched to gas-power.

Agila Oddly Attractive And Now Number One

It's been the baby of the Vauxhall family for over two years, but the Agila is growing up, with new trim levels, new dedicated marketing communications and a market leadership to celebrate.

For the first time since November 2000, Agila also leads the MPC market for retail sales, chalking up 38.5% of sales last month compared with 31.5% for nearest competitor the Suzuki Wagon R+.

As always, the timing of such good news is crucial as Agila is about to kick off a whole new line up - the most thorough overhaul since its launch, as well as an innovative new advertising campaign based on the brand's qualities as a quirky, versatile and confident town car.

For the first time Agila will now be a full 5-saeter, with three 3-point seat belts in the rear. A new Design model tops the range at just £7,995 - with air-conditioning and a CD player adding big-car refinement to the about-towner. This complements the new entry level Expression, which, at £5,995, has seen a £1,000 price cut from last year. Mid-range Club and the Design models also pick up three years free servicing in response to customer demands.

Piloting in six English towns, beginning in Blackpool, the advertising campaign features the tag line: 'Agila. Oddly attractive.' Outdoor posters and colourful advertisements in the local press and on the back of busses are part of the strategy, as well as radio adverts tailored to each town.

Explaining the timing of the campaign, Robert Gutsche from the Agila brand team said: 'Agila is not a 'normal' car, it has a lot of unique qualities that many customers are already switched onto - as November's sales show. This new campaign will build on that strength to make Agila even more of a favourite about town.'

New Griffin Evolves For 21st Century

YOU may have seen something of the new fresher, younger, fun image of Vauxhall in the recent Corsa and Astra TV ads.

Well the Griffin logo has undergone a 21st century makeover and the updated logo reflects this subtle shift of emphasis.

" All great logos evolve," explained Vauxhall Brand Identity Manager Paul Harrison. "We too need to ensure the Griffin logo reflects our position as a maker of innovative, quality, mainstream vehicles which both owners and company employees are proud to be associated with."

The Griffin, which has its origins in the heraldic crest of the Vauxhall family, was last updated in the early 1980's when it evolved from a square to its current round format.

The new version appears in a chrome 3D effect, while the circular red background has been darkened to a more powerful shade of the colour, and also given a curved, reflective surface.

Paul said: "The new logo retains our brand heritage with its high recognition factor while helping to reinforce the positioning of our product range in the quality, mainstream sector.

"We're confident that employees will share our pride in the latest incarnation of the Griffin logo and that it will come to symbolise the qualities of driving excitement, innovation and value for money that we build into our cars."

IBC Celebrates 100,000 Vivaro

The 100,000th Vivaro was driven off the line at IBC Vehicles last Friday. Taking delivery of the special white panel van was Vauxhall fleet customer, Scottish Power.

Peter Thom, plant director, praised the teamwork that had taken the plant to this milestone. "Today marks a real achievement in the development of the Vivaro and with numerous awards already behind it, including the prestigious International Van of the year, Vivaro is our most successful product."

Scottish Power's fleet business manager, Sandy Duckett, received the keys to the milestone van, part of a deal for 10,000 vehicles signed earlier this year. The company selected Vauxhall following a live on-line electronic auction.

Mr Duckett said: "The whole life cost of the Vivaro was very attractive, particularly the fuel economy given that we are an environmentally conscious company. It has been great to see the 100,000 van coming off the line in Scottish Power livery."

BSM Choose Vauxhall

More young people will learn to drive in Vauxhall cars than ever before following the signing of a huge new order between driver training experts BSM and Vauxhall Motors for over 22,000 vehicles worth more than £200m at showroom prices.

The deal was signed on the Vauxhall stand at this year's British International Motor Show at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre on the ninth anniversary of the first deal between the two companies back in 1993.

BSM, the country's largest driver training organisation with more than 2,600 instructors operating from 107 high street centres across the UK, currently trains around 170,000 learners a year in Vauxhall Corsas.

However, the new contract will give BSM instructors and learners greater and wider choice of vehicles than ever before as it will include Astra and the new mini-MPV Meriva, due to be launched in the summer, for the first time.

The BSM order includes the Corsa 1.0 litre 12v Elegance three door, the Corsa 1.2 litre 16v Elegance five door, and the Corsa 1.4 litre 16v Elegance five door automatic. The inclusion of Astra centres on the 1.6 litre 8v LS five door model, while trim levels for Meriva, which was unveiled in the UK for the first time last week at the start of the Motor Show, have still to be announced.

The announcement of the huge new order comes at the same time as the launch of BSM's striking new orange livery mirroring that of its parent company, motoring organisation RAC.

BSM managing director Paul Atkinson said his company had opted to renew its contract with Vauxhall Motors rather than choose vehicles from another manufacturer because "we remain convinced that Vauxhall makes the best cars to meet our needs as market leaders in the learner driver field and because we are convinced that they are the best partner for BSM.

"Orange is a particularly suitable choice as BSM's new corporate colour, with its modern, more youthful 'feel'. And we believe that Vauxhall cars are modern, at the cutting edge of technology and have a real relevance to a younger market. As such, they make the ideal fit with us.

"We first became involved with Vauxhall in 1993 at the time of the launch of a super new car, the Vauxhall Corsa, when we had some 2,000 instructors. Nine years on, with 2,650 instructors, we are still with Corsa. We firmly believe that with the exciting extensions to the range that we have seen, this car still has a huge amount of life and appeal in it.

"Now, with the Astra coming on board - and with the new Astra to be launched in the summer of 2004 - as well as the Meriva, we are offering learner drivers and our instructors a greater and wider choice of new models than ever before."
Maurice Howkins, Vauxhall fleet sales director said that he was delighted that BSM had again chosen Vauxhall as its exclusive business partner.

"This new arrangement continues a nine year association between BSM and Vauxhall, and although that has been mainly centred around the Corsa, we are very pleased now to be adding the Astra and the new Meriva to the BSM contract.

"This will undoubtedly widen the choice for many thousands of potential new drivers and bring them into contact with a wider variety of Vauxhall cars, so they can experience the true driving experience, the sporty performance and the fun associated with the modern generation of Vauxhalls."

New Year Zafira Gets Auto For Diesel Engine as Arch Rival is Eclipsed

Automatic gearbox for 2.0 DTi
Three-way folding for centre seats
Even easier rear seat storage
Sales rise continues

An automatic transmission version of the Vauxhall Zafira MPV fitted with the 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine will be available from early next year.

The move was announced as it was disclosed that Zafira's award-winning success has continued with sales in the first 10 months of this year exceeding those of its arch-rival, the Renault Scenic. Zafira sales totalled 36,783, up by 30 per cent on the same period last year, against Scenic's total of 32,761, a six per cent reduction.

In the vital fleet market alone, Zafira sales so far this year are up by 39 per cent.
The arrival of the automatic gearbox fulfils a promise Vauxhall made to customers as demand for an automatic diesel-powered model began to grow.

"Zafira is becoming even more popular, and so is diesel power. So we are pleased to be able to answer requests from our customers," says Zafira brand manager Andrew Cullis.

Four-speed automatic transmission is already available on 1.8 and 2.2 litre petrol engines.

The new gearbox is one of a series of updates making the Vauxhall Zafira even more user friendly - if that is possible from a car that is still winning awards more than three years into its life!

The Flex7 seating system has made it the most accessible MPV on the market - and it is possible to convert Zafira from a full seven-seater to a single-seater within seconds. Now the second row bench can be split 40:20:40 and the back of the centre.

When folded, the seat also acts as an armrest and a spacious storage compartment with cupholders. The centre seat has a lap and shoulder seat belt and the two outer seats have provision for ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The handles which are used to store the two rear seats out of sight have been modified to make the operation even easier.

Other changes for the new year include white rear indicator lenses, and a new trim level, called Design, that replaces the Comfort model.

The Design specification includes:

Xeno cloth trim (in black, red or blue)
New design steel wheel covers
Centre console in matt chrome, high gloss chrome handbrake button
Body coloured door handles
White dials with chrome rings
CDR500 radio/single CD with steering wheel controls
Leather steering wheel and 12V accessory socket in rear
Elegance:
New velour trim
16-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels
Centre console in charcoal metallic, high gloss chrome handbrake button
Body coloured door handles
Black dials with chrome rings
New convenience pack (seat tilt for driver and co-driver, lumbar support, height adjuster for co-driver, driver's armrest with integrated storage)
GSi:
Alloy effect pedals
Centre console in matt chrome, high gloss chrome handbrake button
New design rear spoiler
New options include:
Electronic climate control for Design and Elegance models
Xenon headlights with high pressure wash and dark tinted effect for Design and Elegance
Alcantara available in silver grey/black and blue/black on GSi
Red/black leather combination available on GSi
CD changer available under front passenger seat (previously not available on GSi)

New colours:
Royal Blue, Silver Lightning, Ultra Blue and Saturn Blue
Zafira on-the-road prices range from £14,245 for the 1.6 litre Club, to £20,245 for the Zafira GSi Turbo - the fastest MPV on Europe's roads. Prices of the new Design model include £15,245 for the 1.6 litre model and £16,245 for the 2.0 DTi (automatic transmission is £995).

See-Round-Bends Lighting Coming To Vectra And Signum

Vauxhall is to introduce pioneering "see round corners" headlight technology in the new Vectra and new Signum later this year.

Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) combines swivelling bi-xenon headlights that turn at a 90-degree angle for intersections and narrow corners.

Vauxhall is the first car manufacturer to make this new lighting technology available in midsize cars. The AFL system, developed jointly by Vauxhall and Hella, will later be available in other Vauxhall models.

"The system offers a significant improvement in road safety and driving comfort. It is also further proof of Vauxhall's ability to innovate, because our goal is to make attractive technology affordable in all types of cars," says Vauxhall managing director Kevin Wale.

The aim of the lighting specialists at Vauxhall was to make driving in the dark and in bad weather conditions easier and above all safer. According to the latest figures from Germany's Federal Statistics Bureau, more than 40 per cent of all automobile accidents resulting in death occur at night, despite the fact that there is up to 80 per cent less traffic on the road than during the day.

Amendments to ECE regulations to allow for the introduction of AFL technology are expected at the beginning of 2003.

Compared to standard headlights, the new Adaptive Forward Lighting system offers the following additional functions:

Bend-light: The swivelling front headlights shine at an angle of up to +/- 15 degrees, depending on the steering angle and car speed. Bends are better illuminated by up to 90 per cent.

Turning-light: Junctions and narrow bends benefit from additional wide-angle lighting. The illumination is nearly 90 degrees to the direction of travel over a distance of around 100 ft from the car. This turning-light is designed to function only at speeds up to 30 mph so that it does not activate in situations like lane changes on the motorway. Key benefit is that dark junctions become significantly safer.

Main-beam headlight: Bi-xenon lights provide powerful lighting on main and dipped beam. With Vauxhall's sophisticated system, dipped-headlights and main-beam can be projected on the road through one single xenon bulb per headlight. A movable aperture in the beam path allows the switching of dipped-headlights to main-beam. The advantages are an especially intensive and bright beam of light.

Picture caption:

Adaptive Forward Lighting provides clear advantages in terms of active safety and comfort, combining swivelling bi-xenon headlights with a light that turns at a 90-degree angle for junctions and narrow bends. The driver can see pedestrians on the road much earlier and so avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Vauxhall Confirms Coupe-Roadster For 2004

There is no let up in the present product offensive from Vauxhall, and today the company confirmed that a compact coupe-roadster will be introduced in 2004. The new model will feature an electro-hydraulically operated, retractable steel roof.

"This car is another important milestone on our way to having attractive, niche-models accounting for around 20 per cent of our product range," said Kevin Wale, Vauxhall Motors chairman and managing director. "The new coupe-roadster promises buyers a lot of fun."

The French coachbuilder, Groupe Henri Heuliez S.A., will build the new Vauxhall. The name and further details will be announced at a later date.

Astra Flagship is New Edition to Vauxhall GSi Family

Astra gets GSi badge at last
200 hp from ECOTEC turbo
Astra's DSA sports chassis exploited to the full
Sporting good looks mimic sought-after Zafira GSi
On sale this month
£16,495 on the road

Vauxhall has extended the high-performance GSi family with a new Astra range topper in the shape of the three-door Astra GSi.

The Astra GSi is designed not to be uncompromising, but rather as a hot hatch which offers plenty in the way of power, comfort, convenience and safety. At the same time, Vauxhall's two-litre ECOTEC turbo engine has been modified slightly and now produces 200 hp for on the road performance that will fully satisfy enthusiasts.

"No other car manufacturer offers the same combination of engine power, functionality and space in this segment at such an attractive price," commented Vauxhall managing director Kevin Wale. "The Astra GSi is an excellent example of Vauxhall's brand values - dynamism, creativity and versatility combined with affordability. We combined our know-how as an innovative car manufacturer with our extensive experience in motor sport to produce the new Astra GSi."

Development was carried out by engineers at the General Motors OPC performance centre in Germany. Astra GSi's modified chassis, packaged together with the high torque, four-cylinder, four-valve turbo engine results in exciting, safe driving.
Meanwhile, the designers have tailored an athletic and sporting body kit for the new Astra flagship, in similar fashion to that worn by its Zafira MPV stablemate.

The interior also features an obvious sporting emphasis while at the same time cosseting driver and occupants alike.

2.0 turbo ECOTEC: power, efficiency, refinement

Vauxhall's 2.0 litre ECOTEC turbo, also installed in the Zafira GSi, Astra Coupe and Convertible, guarantees rapid on the road performance.

Two-hundred horsepower and Astra's accomplished chassis means the three-door GSi sprints from 0 to 60mph in seven seconds; just 9.5 seconds is needed for the mid-range sprint from 50mph to 70mph. Maximum speed is 150mph.

Many will be familiar with the turbo engine's impressive torque curve and immediate throttle response, which produces sustained momentum across the speed range. Maximum torque of 250 Nm is available at a constant boost pressure of 0.85 bar between 1950 and 5600 rpm. Peak power of 200 hp is reached at 5600 rpm.
At full throttle, the engine's electronic management system provides additional reserves by allowing a maximum rpm of 6800 instead of 6400 for a short period.

Clever packaging of the turbo system is the basis for its turbine-like performance; exhaust manifold, turbine housing, waste gate and other elements are integrated as a single, compact component, allowing Vauxhall engineers to significantly reduce engine size and weight.

A precise five-gear manual transmission transfers engine power to the front wheels.
This state of the art Euro 4 compliant turbo engine proves that performance needn't result in high fuel consumption - on the combined cycle, the Astra GSi manages 31.7mpg.

Bodywork and aerodynamics

Astra GSi's expressive exterior design is not meant to simply look good. Functional styling was key from the start - something which can be seen in details like the rear spoiler, which exerts increased downforce on the rear axle for additional stability at high speeds.

In addition to the special 17-inch alloy wheels, other distinctive features include a GSi grille and front and rear lower skirts. Viewed from the front, the enlarged air intakes, black engine grille and air cooler are the main focus. Ducts located next to the round fog lights, integrated into the bumper, channel cool air to the high performance brake system.
The angular lower rear panel creates a distinctive look while accentuating the GSi's alloy wheels and chromed exhaust pipe. Side sills, body-coloured side moulding and door handles, 'carbon-look' B-pillars and dark tinted rear lights finish off the purposeful look of the new Astra.

DSA sport chassis

The basic Astra, of course, provided an excellent foundation upon which the engineers were able to apply their vast motor sport experience. As a result, Vauxhall's chassis engineers have managed to strike the balance between agility, active safety and a standard of comfort suited to everyday and long distance driving.

Proven components of the DSA (Dynamic Safety) chassis have been modified to meet the GSi philosophy - a chassis lowered by 20 mm in the front, stiffer springs and a
combination of switchable Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control (TCPlus) and ABS all contribute to help meet the needs of more demanding drivers.

At 215/40 ZR17, the GSi wears fatter tyres than its sporting SRi brother, fitted to light alloy wheels measuring 7.5 J x 17. Large discs - 308mm ventilated front / 264 mm rear - ensure powerful deceleration.

Much of the testing for the new chassis was carried out on the demanding Nurburgring in Germany. "We have meticulously fine-tuned the chassis," says Volker Strycek. "The new Astra GSi is very agile, a quality which makes cornering great fun. But despite the sporty set-up, the ride chosen for the Astra makes travelling over a long distance a pleasant experience."

Interior quality and standard equipment

The interior ambience and level of equipment have been selected to reflect the nature of the Astra GSi. Four colours are available - Arden Blue (exclusive to GSi), Star Silver, Flame Red and Black Sapphire.

A comprehensive list of standard equipment and the individual choice of materials ensure comfort and class - such as the part-leather sports seats, jointly developed by Vauxhall and seating specialist Recaro and rear seats designed in a matching Recaro-look.

A three-spoke sports steering wheel with integrated radio remote control and two-tone, perforated semi-leather, feels just as good in the hand as the aluminium polished gearshift knob.

The centre console which is finished in metallic grey, instruments with white backgrounds, matt chrome rings, the chromed 'Turbo' sill plates and on Arden Blue models, colour safety belts, all add up to a sporting but elegant cabin.

Standard kit is plentiful, with a handful of additional options available for those who want that little bit more.

Astra GSi comes with:

Air-conditioning
CDR 500 stereo-CD/radio
Trip computer
Cruise control
Electric front windows
Electrically adjusted/heated door mirrors
Central locking with remote control
Full size twin and side airbags
Leather covered sports steering wheel
Recaro sports seats
Ultrasonic alarm

On the option list, to make the Astra GSi even more luxurious, buyers will find xenon headlights and high-pressure washers, full leather trim, electronic climate control, Park Pilot and curtain airbags.

The 3-door Astra GSi is being built in Antwerp, Belgium with the final assembly taking place at Opel's Rüsselsheim plant in Germany.

On the road price is £16,495 - and if demand is similar to that of the Zafira GSi, Vauxhall expects it to sell quickly.

White Van Man Examined In Independent Vauxhall-Funded Industry Report

Motor industry guru Professor Peter Cooke has produced an in-depth survey of light commercial vehicles, sponsored by Vauxhall Motors, but undertaken totally independently.

The study from the Centre of Automotive Industries Management at Nottingham Business School is a trend-setter, because while many surveys have been undertaken into business and company car usage and expectations, there have been relatively few into the development of the van industry and its operation.

Driver issues make up a significant portion of the report which dispels many "white van man" myths as it examines a range of issues associated with the driver, company attitudes to, and provision of driver training, vehicle choice and related matters.
The report also looks in depth at acquisition methods, replacement cycles and disposal policies, fleet management issues and industry expectations.

Astra 1.7 CDTi Engine Opens Up Vauxhall Diesel Offensive

ECOTEC four-valve common rail 80PS engine
Drastically reduced emissions
64.2mpg and 111mph from ECO model
The new Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTi, the first diesel model to meet the stringent Euro 4 emission standard, brings with it better performance, greater running smoothness and greatly reduced exhaust gas pollutants.

The 1686cc 16v 80PS four-cylinder ECOTEC turbo diesel, with two overhead camshafts and common rail direct fuel injection, produces a maximum torque of 170 Nm and a top speed of 108mph in saloon and hatchback models.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is 61.4mpg (58.9mpg for estate). The added aerodynamic drag and roll resistance features in the highly-successful Astra ECO increase fuel efficiency to 64.2mpg - and raise top speed to 111mph.

Deliveries of the Astra models with the new 1.7 CDTi ECOTEC begin in the spring.
The achievement of the Euro 4 emission standard gives the models favourable tax treatment. The Astra 1.7 CDTi is the first diesel to meet this norm, mandatory in all new car types from 2005, without the need for expensive and complex additional emission gas treatment.

Second generation common rail direct injection from Bosch is a technical highlight of the new engine, increasing the injection system pressure to 1,600 bar, and improving control of the injection process.

The new engine also encompasses several features that underscore Vauxhall's goal of becoming the leading diesel producer in Europe.

These features include:

Pneumatically guided swirl valves in the intake tract help bring the fuel-air mixture to a high swirl rate at low rpm. This leads to efficient combustion and high torque. At high rpm the swirl is reduced, improving performance.

An electrical linear EGR valve serves as an additional air restrictor, providing precise regulation of the returning exhaust gases. By restricting the air flow when the engine is shut off, the throttle valve also eliminates the so-called "shut-off kick".
Water-cooled exhaust recirculation lowers the temperature of recycled exhaust, cutting NO2 emissions.

"The 1.7 CDTi ECOTEC engine successfully restricts both particle and nitrogen oxides emissions to the area in which they are produced, thus reducing exhaust emissions," said Rita Forst, managing director of Opel Powertrain.

She said the engine can be introduced into the market in smaller cars in large numbers.

"The Astra 1.7 CDTi is the first model in Vauxhall's comprehensive diesel offensive. During 2003 another three all-new diesel engines will be introduced, each of them at the top of their respective segments from a technological standpoint," said Vauxhall chairman Kevin Wale.

Latest Route Guidance Aids For All Vauxhalls

Up to the minute traffic information on the move and the latest audio technology can now be enjoyed by owners of older Vauxhall cars and vans following the launch of a new range of navigation and in-car music systems through Vauxhall dealers.

A traffic message channel (TMC) is now available as an upgrade for every aftermarket satellite navigation system offered by Vauxhall. Designed by VDO Dayton, the range of dashboard-mounted sets can be retrofitted to all current models, with prices starting at £999 for the MS3100 model, excluding fitting.

This technology uses 'live' information from a variety of sources to provide drivers with the latest news of current traffic conditions on their chosen route to avoid congestion.

Both pictographic information and voice guidance is provided, plus over 65,000 references to petrol stations, hotels, restaurants and other places of interest. Each system offers eight route choices and features a detachable display for theft protection.

For Vauxhall owners in search of the ultimate in in-car audio reproduction, the range topping CD4802 unit features an RDS tuner combined with both CD and MP3 player. MP3 technology allows a phenomenal amount of music to be stored on a single disk for high quality playback.

Manufactured to the same quality as original equipment supplied to Vauxhall by VDO, all aftermarket products interface perfectly with the vehicle's existing steering wheel controls and in some cases remote displays.

Vauxhall in £900 Million Car Rental Deal

Vauxhall has signed its largest-ever car daily rental deal to supply rental giant ANC Rental Corporation, the operator of the National, Alamo and Guy Salmon brands in the UK.

The contract, to supply 22,000 cars each year for the next three years, is worth an estimated £900 million at showroom prices, and includes the entire Vauxhall passenger car model range from Agila to Omega.

Some Vauxhall vans from the Combo and Vivaro range will also form part of the deal.

The contract continues a near-30-year business relationship between the two companies, and comes as Vauxhall moves into its centenary year.
Under the terms of the deal, Vauxhall will supply around 5,500 new Vectras, 2,200 Zafiras, 9,500 Astras, 3,000 Corsas, 500 Agilas and 1,300 Omegas a year. One fifth of the cars will be diesel, and ANC will also trial some Vauxhall Dualfuel LPG vehicles.

Thrifty Car Rental UK Signs Its Largest Vauxhall Supply Agreement To Date

Thrifty Car Rental UK has signed a new rental supply agreement with Vauxhall Motors to take 2,800 new Vauxhall cars worth £39 million at showroom prices over the next 15 months.

The bulk of the vehicles, around 1,250, will be the all-new Vauxhall Vectra 1.8LS while the agreement also includes the provision of 650 Zafiras, and smaller numbers of Omega, Corsa and Astra models. Some 10% of the vehicles will be diesels but the majority will be petrol-driven.

The agreement, which is the largest Thrifty Car Rental has ever signed with Vauxhall Motors, commences on February 1 and further consolidates the relationship between the two companies which dates back over six years. During this time, Vauxhall has been one of the key suppliers of vehicles to the rapidly increasing Thrifty fleet.

Thrifty Car Rental UK plans to distribute the cars across its 71-outlet UK network over the coming months, and Vauxhall vehicles will now comprise 25% of the Thrifty fleet.

John Ryan, Fleet Director, Thrifty Car Rental UK, explains: "The Vauxhall brand is synonymous with quality and dependability and these vehicles continue to be extremely popular with Thrifty customers year on year. This is the main reason for us taking such a large number of Vauxhalls on fleet this year and is an important factor in making sure that we maintain our position as a supplier of high-quality, reliable vehicles. "

Karl Howkins, Rental and Programme Vehicle Acquisition Manager, Vauxhall Motors, said: "Vauxhall are delighted to have agreed a fleet deal with Thrifty Car Rental UK to supply a substantial percentage of their fleet during the year 2003.'
Thrifty Car Rental UK is set to increase its fleet base nationwide across its 71 UK locations by 15% this year. Currently holding a fleet of 6,300 vehicles, Thrifty aims to increase its commercial vehicle fleet by 25% and also boost its luxury vehicle fleet by 40% during the course of the year.

Network Q Reports Another Record Year

Hot on the heels of news from the SMMT about record numbers of new cars bought in 2002, it seems the right used car buy is proving just as popular.

Evidence comes from Vauxhall's used car operation Network Q which has racked up another groundbreaking year. A total of 122,709 cars were sold through the Network Q programme in 2002, beating a previous high of 119,000 in 1999, and an increase of over 22% on 2001's total.

Sales in the first year of Network Q operation in 1991 were 40,600.
